Why support CCA?

Our goal is not to ban smoking from GW. In fact, we don't like the phrase "smoking ban." We do want non-smokers and smokers to have equal rights to clean air. By creating smoke-free zones on campus we can promote the health of all students, faculty, and staff.

Where does smoking bother you the most on campus? We've heard lots of complaints about Gelman Library, University Yard, Thurston, and Rice Hall. Tell us your thoughts and where you want to breathe clean air!

Colonials for Clean Air aims to change George Washington University's smoking policy to protect the health of non-smokers. We want GW to enforce a 25 foot smoke-free barrier around all campus buildings.

About us

About Colonials for Clean AirColonials for Clean Air started in 2011 as a group of seven GW Masters of Public Health Students who became aware of the need to protect students from secondhand smoke. Colonials for Clean Air is a part of the Campuses for Clean Air consortium with Catholic University of America, University of DC, American University, and Howard University. Colonials for Clean Air is supported by Breathe, DC and the Metropolitan Washington Public Health Association. We hope to become an official student group in 2012 to involve all GW students.The goal of Colonials for Clean Air is to promote a healthy GW. We want all campus buildings to have a smoke-free perimeter of 25 feet from the entrance. This will protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke exposure when entering or leaving a building. We also want to protect all open spaces on campus from secondhand smoke and will encourage the administration to make areas like Kogan Plaza and University Yard smokefree.Wouldn't it be nice not to walk through smoke when leaving Gelman Library or walking by the hospital? We think so and hope that you will sign our petition to show administrators you support a smoke-free 25 foot policy.

Meetings & EventsWe've had lots of great meetings in the past two months with GW administration and students. On November 6th we walked the Breathe Deep DC 5K in support of lung cancer research.Our big event will be the Great American Smokeout in Novemeber, be sure to check back for updates! DC LawThe current DC law states that workplace and public buildings are allowed to post "no smoking within 25 feet" signs on entrances. We want GW to adopt this policy and create a 25 foot smoke-free zone around all campus buildings.Learn More

Secondhand SmokeNon-smokers have a right to breathe clean air. Secondhand smoke is known to cause health problems for individuals with asthma, allergies, and respiratory disorders.
