Part 1
EAST VINCENT SCIENCE FAIR
Research for
the Real World
Key Question:
How can everyday people use science and what is the scientific method?
Sometimes we sit in class and wonder "Why do I need to learn this?" or "How will I use this in the real world?" But science is one of the topics you study that directly relates to the real world. It's just a matter of discovering what you're interested in, learning what scientists have already learned about the topic, and then exploring it on your own.
Have you ever seen Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel? These guys have mastered the concept of the scientific method. Their eyes and ears are always open, listening for topics that intrigue them--things that are so fascinating that they just cannot stop thinking about them.
In one episode, they explore a story they heard about pirates and why they wore eye patches.

Sometimes, it seems like the Mythbusters are just playing around and having fun. They are! Armed with a strong science background and the knowledge of how to use the scientific process, they have a great time exploring science concepts.
What is the scientific method? It's a process to help any person safely investigate their questions, and it helps make sure you don't get misleading or false answers.

Let's watch a short video to see what happened to Jared, a young scientist, when he didn't take the time to plan and research before beginning his experiment. As you watch the clip, think about what Jared should have researched before he began experimenting. Click the image below to find out!
One of the key stages in the scientific process is the research phase. You might be wondering why this step is necessary. Gathering research helps us learn what scientists already know, and that will help us create a reasonable hypothesis. Also, knowing WHY things happen is just as important as knowing what happens.
Finally, gathering research helps us create a safe, reliable procedure. Your project might be considered somewhat low-risk, but imagine if the Mythbusters did not do their background research before conducting their experiments. They could easily get hurt!
