What it's all about;
My name is Chris Brown and I am a 17 year old student at Oakland’s Sixth Form College in Waterlooville where I am currently studying for A levels.
Our college has recently been connected with a group called Camps International who are giving a group of students the once in a lifetime opportunity to go on a month long conservational volunteer project to Borneo during 2012.
We will be situated in the centre of a traditional Dusun community in Western Sabah. This part of Borneo has suffered from ruthless deforestation and mining in the past, along with the villagers living in poverty with no access to clean water.
There is also huge unemployment and an erosion of culture as there are no areas for community gatherings.
This project involves volunteers like myself, being involved in permaculture projects, creating safe schooling environments and developing eco tourism facilities to provide an income from their surroundings, we will also be involved in building facilities such as gravity feed systems for providing clean safe drinking water, community halls, teaching English to the local children and in return learning their language.
We will be planting new trees and creating farms to enable the practice of new sustainable farming techniques and to learn about traditional medicines and foods. We will also be doing some marine work which involves endangered turtle conservation and coastal protection along with conservational work in the rainforest helping orang-utans.
The organisation that runs this project is called Camps International and is the only expedition organisation to own, manage and operate 15 permanent and exclusive camps in the heart of rural communities and wildlife areas with an in-country team of over 100 local staff; they employ locals, pay fairly and treat their people ethically.
Their projects are developed in partnership with local communities and address poverty, healthcare, education, welfare, conservation and environmental awareness.
Projects undertaken already by volunteers have benefited over 25,000 people in developing countries so far. Camps International has been recognised at the World Responsible Tourism awards on several occasions.
Here are some of the achievements of the volunteers involved with Camps International:
Volunteers have built and improved 28 schools, planted nearly half a million trees, removed over ten tonnes of marine waste from coastlines, worked to protect over 115,000 acres of wildlife habitat and much more.
This project would offer me a great opportunity to help out the less fortunate people who are still struggling in the world today by providing them with facilities that will make their lives easier, such as fresh drinking water. I will also be able to help the environment and its inhabitants by participating in the conservation work that the project offers.
However, as this trip is on a volunteer basis it means I have to raise the money to cover the costs of the trip for my accommodation and travel along with hopefully providing money for the camp such as building materials. In total I need to raise £3,200 half of which I have to pay this year and the remainder by early 2012.
I would like to ask for your support in helping me to raise this money by donation or sponsoring me for any amount you would be willing to offer. In return, if you are business I could attempt to offer something back to you such as advertising or acknowledgements etc.
The project will be publicised locally through the papers and hopefully on local Radio and possibly TV.
I will also be keeping a Video diary and photos of the trip which could be used.
If you simply just want to support a good cause then you would have the knowledge that you are doing something really tangible to help people who desperately need it.
I thank you for taking the time to read this letter and hope that you will be able to help me in any way possible.
