How to get free satellite TV with Freesat
If you want satellite TV but don't want a lengthy contract or expensive subscription, Freesat could be the right digital TV package for you. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Freesat.
What is Freesat?
Freesat is a free digital TV service that comes to you via satellite. The BBC and ITV have launched a service together, offering around 140 digital TV and radio channels, including some programmes in high definition. Freesat includes channels like BBC One and BBC News, ITV HD, BBC HD and movie channels.
How can I get Freesat?
To get Freesat you need the right equipment. You need either a Freesat digital box or a television that has Freesat receiver installed inside it (an iDTV). You also need a satellite dish, which will come with an installation package. Almost all homes in the UK can receive Freesat.
How much does Freesat cost?
The only cost associated with Freesat is in getting set up - there are no ongoing subscriptions or contracts.
A basic Freesat digital box starts from around €80. Freesat boxes that allow you to watch in high definition (HD) start from around €200 - and you'll need an HD-ready TV. You can also buy Freesat HD digital video recorders, or use an HDTV set that has Freesat HD already installed. The cost of the satellite dish and installation starts from around €120.
Can I have Freesat as well as my existing digital TV service?
The two can run at the same time, in fact, if you have a working satellite dish, you may be able to use it to receive Freesat as well. Just remember to check in with your supplier first if your current satellite equipment is still under warranty, in case it is affected.
Are there any other free satellite tv services?
Freesat from Sky is another offering, with more than 240 digital TV channels and 85 digital radio channels available. You can get this package for a one-off payment of €200.
