It's amazing what a theatrical poster can do if it's designed properly. Before it does anything it has to catch your attention in an instant. Then it just has to hold it. Ive been creating posters for theatre since 2007, many for my local amateur theatre, where I also get on stage. The reason Ive told you that is that acting has given me a proper understanding of theatre. My background in advertising enables me to sell it. Thats why I dont just create a visually attractive image for a production. I create an image with meaning. A concept. Something that reflects the tone of the play, the nature of the story and the style of the production - often developed in collaboration with the play's director. I then telegraph that information, through a logo, an image and a copy line that encourages the audience to question what they see, that engages them, and then intrigues. It takes time, but every play needs that degree of interrogation. Because the stronger and more informed the poster's concept, the less time it takes to work.
