Tegan began dancing under private instruction with Maria Archer in 1977 at the age of 15. Unlike many dancers today, she did not change her instructor, who was trained in the classical technique. As a result, Tegan's dance style is old, and unlike modern bellydance. There is a strong focus on fluidity, flexibility, arm movements, footwork, and floorwork rarely seen in today's dancers. Tegan is listed as "Who's Who in International Dance" with the United Nations C.I.D., and is a highly sought after instructor and performer of Classical Egyptian dance.
