In ancient Rome, confarreatio was a form of marriage. The ceremony involved the bride and bridegroom sharing a cake of spelt, in Latin far or panis farreus, hence the rite's name. The woman passed directly from the hand of her father to that of her new husband. Although cakes have come a long way, a cake is a key part of any celebration and it's still just as important today.
