Bursary Foundation Line Frame

Bursaries have been given since 1968 by the White Rock/Surrey Club to Surrey and White Rock women entering their third year or higher of an accredited university degree program. In November, 1986, the Bursary Foundation was established, thus enabling the club to issue receipts for income tax purposes. The number and amount of bursaries varies. In 2009, three “jubilee” bursaries of $3000 were given as a result of a “toonie drive” among the members, marking the club’'s 50th anniversary. In 2010 and 2011 two bursaries of $2,500 were awarded. Who Can Join The White Rock Surrey Club welcomes new members who may join under any one of the following categories:Regular - women who reside in Canada and hold a degree from an accredited university and women who hold certificates or licenses in fields that now require degrees, for example, nurses and chartered accountants.Associate - women without a university education who support the objectives of the Club. Associate members can vote and fully participate in all activities and interest groups. Associate Members may only comprise up to 25% of the total club membership.Student - a full time university or college student and is enrolled in a degree, diploma or equivalent program that leads to graduate studies.Dual - a member who holds membership in more than one CFUW clubLife - Life Membership may be conferred on a member who has given outstanding service to the White Rock Surrey Club.

Education Committee The Education Committee of the CFUW White Rock/Surrey club is committed to:1. Promoting and supporting a sound concept of educational policies within the community.2. Monitoring local education issues and bringing these to the club's attention.3. Writing letters and briefs to appropriate elected officials that are issued through the Club President relating to educational concerns in the community, province or country.4. Meeting with local politicians to advocate for CFUW resolutions and policies.Present Activities of the Committee:1. The committee drafted the resolution Early Childhood Learning and Development approved by the BC AGM in April 2006. Our committee is pursuing action plans encouraging elected officials to increase sustainable funding for programs following the fundamentals of the resolution.2. One to One Literacy Program - We train volunteers to provide students, in a one to one situation, with rich literacy experiences that focus on improvement of reading and conversational skills and self confidence. The program is associated with the One to One Literacy Society in Vancouver, a volunteer based, non-profit organization. Our club provides a collection of reading materials to support this program which is active at two (2) elementary schools in the Surrey School District.3. Assistance with the book collections at the Children's Library and the Parents' Resource Library at Crescent Beach Services.4. Attendance at school trustee meetings, educational forums and seminars that enhance the members' knowledge base.

Environment Committee The Environment Committee is committed to:Educating themselves and local CFUW members about current environmental concerns and practical steps to deal with those concerns.Continuing support of Burns Bog environmental concerns where needed.Choosing a larger environmental concern to deal with each year.Following up on CFUW resolutions which are related to the environment.This year, the Environment Committee is looking at the problem of clean water. Such concerns as water bottles and dumping of waste into the Bay are examples.

Public Affairs Public Affairs are the response by CFUW to issues that concern women's equality and the status of women and girls in the areas of education, peace, justice and human rights. The most common vehicle used by CFUW to address these issues is the RESOLUTION process.Resolutions are a way of educating our members about current issues. Resolutions are the primary public awareness tool that we have to take an issue from coast-to-coast through 118 clubs to inform 9200 members. Resolutions form the framework for CFUW action and advocacy. They become CFUW policy. Our policy is what permits us to take advocacy action. Without policy, CFUW cannot express its voice.Early Resolutions taken on by CFUW were centered on issues such as protesting the dismissal of married women university staff, advocating for pay equity, advocating for disarmament, advocating for the plight of post-WWII refugees and advocating for the expansion of women's access to post-secondary education in Canada.Resolutions provide direction for CFUW clubs in terms of planning meeting programs and arranging for speakers, engage CFUW members in studying a broad range of socio-economic issues, proposing and assessing remedial actions, developing Club positions and defining national policies.Resolutions come from the grassroots of the organization and are the result of extensive research, debate, and consultation. In general, local issues are championed by CFUW Clubs, provincial issues by Provincial Councils, and national issues by the CFUW Board supported by the National Office. Resolutions also allow us to be proactive. When a resolution is passed we can contact local public officials to share our concerns. They also allow us to react to the government's agenda, its consultations and legislation. They permit us to react to and take action for problems within our communities. Resolutions also provide a venue for collaboration with other organizations with similar concerns.

Community Grants During some years, the White Rock/Surrey Club is able to give community grants to local organizations, depending on the amount available from previous successful fund raising efforts.To be eligible for a grant, the project must be proposed by a local organization and must support:Education of women or children, orThe betterment of women's livesInvitations to apply for a Community Grant are publicized in the fall, with the closing date usually in January. Grants are normally awarded in March or April.

Community Outreach

Community Outreach ONE TO ONEA Childrens Literacy Program The Educational Issues Group of the Canadian Federation of University Women works collaboratively with the One to One Literacy Society in Vancouver to fund and support a childrens literacy program in which trained volunteers tutor in a school setting. The program strives to provide a supportive environment for learning which builds each childs self-confidence and literacy skills, enabling them to become independent, competent learners. At present, H.T. Thrift Elementary and Peace Arch Elementary are the schools in which we are involved. Our group provides the volunteers, books, learning supplies, and organization in collaborating with the learning support teams in the schools. Eight volunteers are required for each school, and as many spares as we can recruit. The 8 volunteers will each attend at the school for a morning or an afternoon once weekly, Monday to Thursday on a set schedule. Approximately 8 children will benefit from this program each session. There are 3 sessions of approximately 8 to 10 weeks each school year. We begin our schedule early in October. This project meets the goals of our organization locally and nationally. To volunteer for this project, you need not be a teacher, but a caring individual dedicated to the importance of good literacy skills in young children and who enjoys working and being with children. Mainly, your time will be spent either listening to children read, or reading to them, discussing this with them, perhaps playing a game. There is a training program in the fall. Each volunteer is provided with a training manual and some strategies to help the children. This program has been well accepted by the students and the teachers as an intregal part of the literacy programs in their schools.
