*How to choose a Belly Dance Teacher

This applies to those members of the belly dance community who play an ACTIVE & PROFESSIONAL role ... along with these PRIVELEGES come special RESPONSIBILITIES. Professional

Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall extend professional courtesy to all fellow professionals. For example, "standard rates" should be adhered to.

ProfessionalDancers/Instructors/Choreographers should keep a "Standard of Excellence" by continuing their dance education. Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall only offer services for which they are trained and qualified to perform.

*Each Professional Dancer's/Instructor's/Choreographer's behavior reflects on public perception of the dance. Therefore, while in public and identifiable as a Professional Dancer/Instructor/Choreographer you must avoid behavior that clearly is in violation of accepted moral and legal standards.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall not, under the auspices of Middle Eastern dance, incorporate the behaviors or practices of erotic dance, stripping, or related fields. They agree to maintain boundaries between these very separate vocations.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall make every attempt to be aware of workplace and payment standards and not lower the standards of pay nor engage in workplace practices that degrade the respect for the art form, degrade working conditions, or reward it based on factors other than merit and ability in dance.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall keep the physical and mental well-being of students as a primary consideration. For instance: Instructors will not restrict information about seminars or workshop events from their students when the instructor, sponsor, and material presented are ethical, accurate, and appropriate to the level of the student. Instructors may not forbid their students from studying with others.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall agree to keep the students first. For example, Instructors shall never view students as "competition" but instead should help mentor those students with talent, interest, motivation and ethics into future peers who will be a credit to the field, and in general try to guide, help and address concerns. No one who is concerned about being "passed" by a student should teach. Being exceeded is what we all hope so that the next generation will rise higher.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall not, through personal contact or through representatives, attempt to recruit students from another school or institution.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall speak the truth about professional experience. For example, you shall refrain from making false claims to past fame or affiliations. You shall not falsify credentials. You shall not knowingly disseminate unverified or unsupported pejorative insinuations or statements about another professional.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall respect the intellectual property of others and not represent it as their own or belonging to anyone other than the originator.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers agree to credit sources for choreography, music, photography, and intellectual property in general when possible.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall guard the individual rights and personal dignity of each student and not engage in discriminatory practices in regard to age, weight, religion, disability, race, gender, or sexual orientation.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers agree to respect the privacy of all students served and responsibly use personal information gained from that relationship.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers shall not monetarily manipulate their students. For example, instructors may not require their students to purchase products or services from them at a price that is substantially more than the market rate as a condition of their remaining in class. Instructors shall not promise students unrealistic guarantees of work.

*Professional Dancers/Instructors/Choreographers, who adhere to the "Code of Ethics & Professionalism", are of high moral character and conduct themselves and their practice in a professional and ethical manner.

This "Code of Ethics & Professionalism" is a GUIDELINE ... that should assist us in UPHOLDING this art form & more importantly ... in RESPECTING EACH OTHER.

1 ... DO ... Let the other professional dancers/instructors/choreographers, especially the new ones; know what the fair and established pay rate is in your area, for classes, performances & shows.

2 ... DON'T ... Never make an offer to take over another performers current gig, especially at a lower pay rate.

3 ... DON'T ... If you are approached for a gig - never work for less than the previous performer was making, DON'T do free demo this will only lower your perceived value.

4 ... DON'T ... Don't badmouth other professional dancers/instructors/choreographers. You will get a rep as a "bad mouth".

5 ... DO ... Talk to other professional dancers/instructors/choreographers and build a support network. This is your best source of job information, referrals and help when you need it. And remember this is a two way street.

6 ... DO ... Be a total professional. Know your strengths & limitations. If you need help here, talk to those other professional dancers/instructors/choreographers in your support network. And always give friendly suggestions when needed and help when asked.

7 ... DO ... Share information with your fellow professional dancers/instructors/choreographers, especially about what "jobs" have problems and which should be avoided. You don't want friends to become victims too; "jobs" with a reputation for underhanded practices can be avoided.

8 ... DON'T ... There will always be different levels of talent - Don't promote rivalry, competition or cliques. It will hurt business in the long run.

9 ... DO ... Teach the new professional dancers/instructors/choreographers in your area this basic code. It is in your best interest to work in a field with other professionals. Some old ones may need a refresher course too. It is always better to have the other professional dancer/instructor/choreographer be your friend than a competitor and enemy. "We must learn to hang together or we will all hang separately." Even sharks don't eat each other.

Educating the public on what proper standards are is the only way to ensure a future of healthy dancers, create informed audience members, and promote a new generation of qualified teachers. The responsibility for standards will not fall on some national governing board. Rather, it spreads out from each of us to our students and the public at large.

*The best place to find a belly dance teacher is online. Usually, they're not listed in the phone book and they can be difficult to find if you don't know where to look. Some of the best places to start your search are Yahoo groups in your area. Join a Yahoo group, post an introduction message and mention your on the look out for a teacher. Do a Yellow Pages search for belly dance teachers in your area.

*The next step is to decide just how far you are willing to travel for classes. Are you willing to travel a long distance for a better instructor? Are you prepared to dedicate yourself to one instructor? What do you want in a dance class? These are all good questions to ask yourself when you begin the search. Write them down and include the answers.

*After the research have been done, write down the belly dance teachers you are most interested in. Now you can start sampling. Find a time to call each one and ask questions. You'll want to know how long they've been a belly dancer, how long they've been a teacher, what their accomplishments are and what their dance style is. This is your search and you are entitled to ask those questions.

*Call the Teachers you want to try to set up a trial class. No respectable dance teacher will turn you down for a trial class. If they say no, accept it as unprofessional and move on, so that will depend of the teacher you will encounter. But as it is clearly mentioned that NO RESPECTABLE DANCE TEACHER WILL TURN YOU DOWN FOR A TRIAL CLASS unless there will be conflict on schedules... You should remember that trial class does not mean a free class. When you set appointment for a teacher they may have some specific hour fee. Trial means, that you are attending a class that this could be irregular class for one time only wherein you could try for once or you could decide to continue more in a regular basis lesson/class after the trial class.

*(In some cases there would be teachers offer for free and we respect their own rules)

As per our Rules we follow Professional Ethics and Standards.

*Does the teacher know what she's talking about? Does the class environment seem like a positive one? Can you understand the breakdowns of moves? These are all important things to look at when searching for a belly dance teacher.

*Have them break down the move in front of you, up close and personal. No one will think you are dumb for not knowing the move. In fact, they will respect you more for asking for help.

Egyptian Raks Al-Sharqi

This Egyptian term means Dance of the Easterner - one preferred by some American belly dancers.

The term Oriental comes from the Arabic term raqs sharqi which means "dance of the East" or "dance of the Orient", the Arabic name for what Americans call belly dance. The Middle Eastern bellydance stars performing in Arabic that helped introduce Oriental dance around the world. referred to as "Raks Al Sharki" (dance of the East); in Turkish cultures, "Oryantal" dance, In English speaking areas, it is also called "Arabic dance", "Middle Eastern dance," and "Oriental dance the most widely recognized term is "bellydance" and that term is the most accurate when applied to modern, Westernized versions of the dance "belly dancing" became the most widely recognized in the U.S.

Egyptian style bellydance uses the belly dance moves and core belly dance techniques.

Since the 1950s, it has been illegal in Egypt, for bellydancers to perform publicly with their abdomens uncovered. Costumes for Raks Sharki are usually a long, one-piece gown or a two-piece outfit (a decorated bra top and skirt) with a sheer body stocking covering the midsection.

The body stocking, which is required by law in Egypt, may be either flesh-color, or a color that coordinates with the other pieces. Often the body stockings are decorated on the stomach with sequins. Some American dancers who do Egyptian style may opt to eliminate the body stocking, since it's not required by U.S. law--it depends on how closely the dancer wants to emulate the Egyptian look. Egyptian dancer usually enters wearing a costume called "bedleh” Egyptian bedleh (costume) made by the famous Egyptian costume maker, Madame Abla. Morocco is a well known performer, instructor, and dance researcher based in New York City. She is highly respected by leaders of the Egyptian dance community.

dancers often use veil work, floor work and zills (finger cymbals) in their solo performance. The dancer has the freedom to interpet the music maybe incorporating moves from ther dance forms such as ballet, hip hop/street in a subtle way. Dancers tend to wear a two piece costume, of a bra top and skirt or harem pants, and it is often very glitzy, heavy with beads & sequins along with a hip/coin belt. The Egyptian Oriental look described here is popular all over the world, since dancers from all parts of the world travel to Egypt and return home with new cassette tapes and CD's, new costumes, training from Egyptian teachers, and inspiration from the shows they have seen there. In addition, dancers worldwide have the opportunity to study videos of performances by top Egyptian dancers, and many popular Egyptian dancers travel around the world to teach their art. In some countries, there may be some American influence due to well-known American instructors who have traveled there and offered workshops, or due to dancers who have relocated there after living in the United States for some time. However the above mention to describe, the belly dance styles as used in the United States has brought a long way using all over the world .

The Belly Dance is identified by swaying hips, undulating torso, and articulated isolations. the technique of isolating lower body moves from upper body moves, causes a noticeable and continuous movement in the mid-section. Shimmies and body vibrations of movements also cause a reaction in the belly. It's an effective exercise, holistic health, a fun hobby and relaxation. Belly Dancing is also associated and known with these terms:

*Balady or Raks Balady (also spelled Baladi or Beladi)

*Egyptian Raks Al-Sharqi

1. Why do i need to be a member?

Meaning you are taught based on our standard quality trainings We make sure

that they are well disciplined as abiding all rules of PBD GROUP. The CCMFDS

is a Private Group for Professional Belly Dancers , which is independent .

2. Who is it for?

-the group welcome everyone . Kids,Teens, Adults, Performer/ Professionals,

Instructors.

3. How much is the membership?

4. What do i expect as part of The CCMFDS PBD GROUP?

-As a member you will get an EXCULSIVE membership ID .

You will be taught with a high standard training.

5. What are the requirements to be a member of The CCMFDS PBD GROUP?

-You just need to sign up form for membership. and pay for your ID.

For some with medical concerns, if it's required by your doctor to take dance

classes like this you need to present us your doctors clearance/medical

certificate signed by your medical doctor and fill up form and register at the

office.

6. Does membership expire?

-Membership is good for 1 YEAR and it's renewable . Your

membership will automatically take effect from the time you register good for

1 YEAR PERIOD.

7. What to wear during a belly dance class?

In order to learn belly dancing, you do not need to buy expensive gear. You

need to wear:

Comfortable gym trousers (or yoga trousers, stretch leggings or jazz trousers)

or a large skirt.

A top, such as a sport bra, or anything that allows you to move in comfort

and that gives adequate support. It is better if the top is cut short above the

midriff so the teacher wil be able to check your torso movements better.

No shoes - the best thing is to dance barefooted but if you prefer you can use

hermes dance sandals or non-slippery socks.

A hip scarf. It can be just a normal scarf with fringes, or a belly dance hip

scarf with coins or beads. You can buy it online, in some stalls or shops selling

Egyptian items/bellydance items or from your teacher.

8. How to register and become a member of The CCMFDS PBD GROUP?

-You could contact and write us using contact form and you will get

instructions to be emailed to you. Indicate whether you want to apply for

membership or you are going to register to take a class workshop which are

posted in schedule. OR you may call and visit us directly to register at

CCMFDS OFFICE. No forms are being distributed out from the office. Forms

are not valid without seal. All payments should be paid directly only in the

OFFICE. We do not have any agent or third party to represent or solicit

payments or distribute application forms or to the Certified Trainer or during

workshop on locations and all forms are not valid without the signature of the

Dance Director and embosed sealed. (checked forms).

9. Non-members, and walk- ins are also welcome to join CLASSES. Regular fees

may apply, and have the opputunity to avail special discounts for group of

enrollees.

10. I want to get Certified by the group as Certified BD TEACHER of CCMFDS, I am

Professional BellyDancer/Instructor can i be a member too? or had my

trainings with other group/teacher/organization, can i still be a member and get

certified by the Group?

You can be a member by signing up and pay the membership ID fee. Yes you

could be certified by us as a member of the group/Teacher.

You need to attend training , enroll the teachers course, pay for the fees

and take our practical exams .OR you have the options byJust submitting and

presenting your current 20 minutes video -trainings, for each basic and advance

classes that you are instructing in a group/class/ or part of the group class

trainings showing clear instructions,teaching right techniques, and 20 minutes

of your own- Original choreography [HQ] for us to evaluate your

trainings/presentations,teachings, performances as proof and pay for the

Assestment/evaluation testing fee *CONTACT CCMFDS After the Evatluation.

We will inform you to TO GET GET YOUR your Certification as Certified BD

TEACHER OF CCMFDS and automactically member of the group within the

period of your certification validity upon passing and approval.

Certificaton is valid for 2 year period. To re- certify, you need to take the testing

again or update with us and or send your recent video clips for trainings and

pay your fee at the office. As a Professional Belly Dancer and a Teacher you

will be included in our List Directory for Certified Belly Dance Instructors, and

Professional Belly Dancers assigned.

*Everyone could to join..even if you are part of other organization and

you wish to become a member and get certified by us too but in some cases

we may ask a letter from you coming from your association authority

allowing you join the CCMFDS PBD GROUP if its part of their rules to ask

permission you need to submit that to us if thats the case. That may certify

you that has no other obligation pending from them. Present it to us

and it must be signed by your organizer/group Leader/association or whatever

you call it.

11. How to become certified BD TEACHER?

We offer Training Course for Teaching belly danceYou must successfuly

completed the Teaching method and the Curriculum. Who will undergo practical

Examinations. (We only Post Announcement for the Teaching course). 3

months to finish the course.

12. How much to renew my Membership?

*Membership is renewable plus you will still get your

EXCLUSIVE membership ID, *30% OFF on all fees ranging P2500 up

workshops, trainings, lessons OFFER, that they want to attend to..which are

posted in schedules & news letters and items.

*Merbership is not transferable. and non refundable.

13. *I don't want to be a member but could i just register or enroll to any belly

Dance Class or workhops, trainings or attend seminars?

Yes . You just need to enroll in a class or workshops, trainings or

seminar of your choice whatever is offer posted in schedule. Regular fees

may apply.

For new registrants/enrollees for 2 or more /group of persons each will get

*10% off for workshops, trainings, or class lessons posted in

schedules. Fee ranging from P2500 up and free registration.

14. About the Certificates.

-Each Certificates of Completion, Attendance, Perfomance, Achievement

is earned by the student according to time spent in achieving her success.

and the student does not need to pay for this certificate. it will be awarded

upon completing the course or performance,

-Certificates are not recognised by other institution. Certificates are write

proof that the students achieve the Belly Dance Level under our standard of

training and studying with us and to verify that the certificate are being issued

to the right person and completed the course. Certificates are signed by the

expert Belly Dancer.

15. Whats the difference of being a member and non member regular students?

Members are entitled to 10% OFF *on all fees ranging P2500 up

workshops, trainings, lessons OFFER, that they want to attend to..which are

posted in schedules & news letters and items. WHILE non member pay regular

rates.

*Note: Teachers course fee are not included in the discounted rates....
