Helping Older Orphans
"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime."
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after the orphan and widow in their distress James 1: 27.
Our Vision
Our vision is to provide orphans aged 14 upwards, who are neglected by the law, in need of a safe home and family environment and need education and instruction. We aim to deliver not only a home but a high level of interaction, teaching, learning and community involvement, teaching a lost generation to rebuild Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe is a place that really needs our help. Cholera, AIDS, starvation, homelessness, death and economic problems are amongst some of the things Zimbabweans face.
As the country faces these problems, the world has forgotten Zimbabwes orphans. There are simply too many orphans, many of which dont make it into orphanages and care homes. The AIDS crisis in Zimbabwe has left approximately 1.3 million children as orphans. In January this year (2009), it was estimated that 90% of people are unemployed and 5 million people were starving.
As Christians, we recognised that orphans are very much on God's heart. Jesus said 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these' Mark 10:14. Jesus came to teach us how to love, and we are told to extend this love to His hurting world: 'let justice flow like water and integrity like an unfailing stream' Amos 5:25.
The Problem At the age of fourteen, many teenage orphans have to leave the orphanages to go live with living relatives, or even parents. This might sound good, but often teenagers have to go back to abusive parents or to extremely poor families, meaning there is no money, food or education. Many run away because of the bad conditions and turn to other means to survive. This rejection, faced by many, causes hopelessness and despair.
What is it we want to do? Our vision is to create a centre/home for a number of teenage orphans in a medium-density area of Harare. We are concerned about the future of Zimbabwe and therefore are committed to long term and sustainable answers to the problems.
Our vision provides the following:
• A home and shelter for those orphans who have no where else, or no where safe to live. In the UK, we call these hostels, half way houses or shelter, rather than orphanages. We want to create a home which provides for every child a foundation from which they can move on, like everybody else but still feel free to come back home to see brothers and sisters as well as parents, like what every other child with a family does.
• A centre for growth, learning and teaching, training for the long term and sustainable future of Zimbabwe. We are focused on a long term project. We hope to offer free advice, teaching and workshops to orphaned teenagers, in order to help youngsters rebuild their country. We would teach various subjects and programmes, such as HIV/AIDS and sex education, citizenship, batik and material workshops, building workshops, agriculture and food, health and so on.
Zimbabwe needs to see the following happen:
•A fall in teenage crime
•A fall in unwanted children, left orphaned
•A drop in teenage HIV/AIDS
•A rise in school attendance and higher education courses
•A fall in teenage orphan homelessness
•A rise in teenage education/course exam and pass rates
•Change in sex education, citizenship, life skills, rebuilding a sustainable Zimbabwe
•A greater interest in essential life skills such as agriculture, citizenship, building, environment and so on
•A greater world wide interest in restoring Zimbabwe, including food aid
