"Cardinal" was build in 1935 and was given the name "Strandheim". Boatbuilder Lars Salthammer, Vestnes was the constructor and Hans Strand from Sande was the owner. Strandheim was a 42 ft. coastfishingboat and had a 20 hp.Volda-engine. In 1945 she was extended to 51,4 ft. and had a new engine, a 30 hp Volda.. In the middle of the 50`s she once again got a new engine. It was a 40 hp Volda.

In 1962 the family Strand sold her to Jon A. Flem from Haram and she got a new name. She was named "Rodon". The next owner, Magnus Kalvøy, Værlandet, used the same name and he was the last owner that used her as a fishingboat.

In 1970 "Rodon" was sold to Arthur Årseth, Bergen and he give her the name "Gubben"(old man) Arthur rebuild her as a yacht and the family used her almost ten years. Gubben was used as rescue-ship for small boats and had several trips from Bergen to Shetland Islands in the 70`s. In 1979, Jan Gunnar Sjo from Halsnøy bought Gubben and he renamed her "Gubben 2". Jan Gunnar was owner only one year, and sold her back to Bergen. Two new owners renamed her "Cardinal" and used her until 1987. Then the Volda Engine was taken out and she was nearly forgotten in 8 years.

In 1996 Cardinal where set on shore and a big work started. Bjørn Alvøen renewed the hull, he removed the deck, all the interior and the wheelhouse. He wanted to use the hull and build her to a totally new type of ship, more like a Grand Bank Trawler. His health went bad and all the work stopped.
I, Paul Karlsen, bought the hull in august 2002 and I started the work to build her to a gaff-rigged ketch at once. I wanted her to look like the old fashion fishing-boats, but with a lower wheelhouse. I hope I made it so.
It started like this.
