the coastal-fishingboat that became a sailingship
Here I will try to show a little about the work that is made from 2002 when I started on the rebuilding and to this day.
It has been a dream from the days as a boy, when I first was on board a fishing- boat during the visit with my family on the north west. I was out fishing on the field with "Tampen 1" . She was owned and driven by Kristian Slatlem, Vevang.
Despite a terrible seasickness, this trip has come back to me periodically over the years.
So, when a good friend told me about the hull of an old fishing boat that had been lying for several years without being worked on, then, I was completely delivered, the dream would finally come true. After negotiations with the owner Bjørn Alvøen and disclosure of my plans for the boat, I finally got to buy the hull. Since then, all activities and resources are moved to the Cardinal.
Hope you find the story of the Cardinal's interesting.
Best regards Paul.
"Cardinal" was built in 1935, and was named "Strandheim". There was a ship builder Lars Salthammer on Vestnes in Moere og Romsdal who built the boat for Hans Sande from
Sande as a 42 ft. fishing boat with 20 hp. Volda Motor.
A so-called "Nygårdsvoldbåt".
That meant state funding for construction through the State Fishermen's Bank. This was a measure that was implemented for the renewal of the fishing fleet in the harsh 30-years
In 1945 she was lengthened to 51.4 ft. and got a new and larger engine - a 30 hp. Volda Motor. This was done by Rasmus Høydalen in Høydalsvik, Austefjorden ..
Mid-fifties increased demand for higher speed, and thus it was inserted a new Volda Motor, now at 40 hp.
In 1962 the family sold the "Strandheim" to Jon A. Flem from Longva, Haram and she got the name "Rodon" with characteristics M125H.
In 1964 sold Flem "Rodon" further south to Magnus Kalvøy from Værlandet and she was still registered in the Register notice for the fishing fleet with characteristic SF338A until 1970
In 1970 Rodon was sold to Arthur Årseth, Bergen and he gave her the name GUBBEN (old man) Arthur rebuild her as a yacht and the family used her almost ten years. Gubben was used as rescue-ship for small boats that crosses the North Sea and had several trips from Bergen to Shetland Islands in the 70`s.
Since 2002, I have worked, almost every day after my work as a technician, on the construction of Cardinal. I have used almost 5000 hrs. since the start. You can see the construction-work in Cardinal`s photo-album.
I, Paul Karlsen, bought the hull in late summer 2002, and the work to rebuild the boat was started right away.
It began to change the deck beam carriers from the foredeck and into the engine room, so that the new deck beams had a new and proper attachment. Moreover, it has been kind in battles with new deck, new wheelhouse and interior .
New motor is inserted, a Scania D11. Cardinal is re-registered in the Norwegian Ordained Ship Register (NOR) in 2006 and has his old callsign-LCLB-.
The photo album has pictures that show progress toward what eventually became a fork rigged "Ketch".
So far, the work has passed by about 4 to 5000 hours , with great help from my son Birger, so all the time and my resources are spent on board the "Cardinal".

In the marine environment is much that is called the Cardinal, among other things, Cardinal marks are an international navigation system Cardinal marks indicate the direction of safety as a cardinal (compass) direction (north, east, south or west) relative to the mark.
Similarly, the lobster is called
Ocean Cardinal.
There is also a fish called
Cardinal, so the name "Cardinal"
has a solid foundation in the maritime
environment.
The name's origin:
It is the bird "Northern Cardinal" that has given "Cardinal" her name, therefore the logo is also a Cardinal.
"Northern Cardinal" is living in North America.

The ketch is popular among long distance cruisers as the additional sail allows for a better balance, and a smaller more easily handled mainsail for the same overall sail area. It also allows sailing on mizzen and jib only without introducing excessive lee helm, and in an emergency can be quite well steered without use of the rudder. The ketch is a popular rig in northern European waters where sudden increases in wind strength sometimes requires a rapid reefing: the mainsail can be dropped, reducing sail and leaving a balanced sail-plan with jib and mizzen set.
Running before the wind or reaching across the wind, a ketch may carry extra sails such as a spinnaker on the main mast, and a spinnaker or (mizzen staysail) on the mizzen mast.
A ketch is a sailing craft with two masts: a main mast, and a shorter mizzen mast abaft (rearward) of the main mast, but forward of the rudder. Both masts are rigged mainly fore-and-aft. From one to three jibs may be carried forward of the main mast when going to windward. If a ketch is not rigged for jibs it is called a cat ketch, sometimes called a periauger. On older, larger ketches the main mast may in addition carry one or more square rigged topsails. A ketch may also carry extra sails, see below.
The lowest fore-and-aft sail on the main mast is called the mainsail, while that on the mizzen is called the mizzen sail. These may be any type of fore-and-aft sail, in any combination. The Scots Zulu, for example, had a dipping lug main with a standing lug mizzen.
Heradstveit Farm Beautifully situated in Hardanger.
On an open field, 250 over sea level lays the Heradstveit farm. In a beautiful culture landscape, surrounded by woods, mountains with a view towards Folgefonna National Park. There has been activ farming in several hundreds of years. Farm number 1, user number 2 has been living of the woods and the sawmill, vegetables and cows. Today Johannes Heradstveit lives of the woods and sawmill. Since 2006 has An Riemslag started an Herberge with the basis in the 140 years old main building on the farm. The vision is to offer experiences both to the local people and they who are on the road. We can offer a good bed, local food with an international turn and fresh air. Here you can take it easy or be active.
About the farm
The farm went from father to son since the 15th century. The people were farmers like almost all of them. They lived of the cows and what they found nearby or in the woods. Sometimes the farmer was out fishing herring
The Heradstveit farms are long from civilization which was unfortunately till there came modern communication with roads and cars. It was a long way to school and wanted one to go to the church it was a tour through the forrest to Vikøy. This way has been used in ages and is still in use through a varied landscape. The stabbur is the oldest building on the farm. Now the house is in use as a museum and is a hiding place for everything that belongs to the farm and the generations through time.
The Sawmill
On Heradsrveit Saw has Johannes
hand-picked materials for use during construction of the Cardinal.
It is used only for the best feet of stocky pine for beams and decks.

Cardinal has recently received full sail wardrobe of the type tanbark Classic. This is the sail that has the color and that look like old bark cotton sails, but with modern features of high quality. When the standing and running rigging is not quite ready can I unfortunately do not show pictures of these. Come back, images come as soon the rig is finished.
