My Design philosophy
I am an artist. I wanted that to show in every design aspect of my home.
Why be the same as everyone else?
Why not be totally different?
When designing my own home, I wanted everything to be right. I wanted to use the surroundings, as well as create a beautiful interior.
The home was built in a Southwestern Adobe style. Vigas jutting out of the exterior walls. Blue window frames. Parapet walls and sandy stucco.
With the massive Poincianas blooming in the summer, a canopy of cool green leaves keeps the house cool. With all of those leaves gone in the winter, the sun warms the home through the many, huge windows. The wood-burning fireplace warms the home on the few really cold days we get. Casa Poinciana sits on one of two buildable lots. Hedges of magnolia trees, bamboo, guava, and olive trees separate the house from the road. The Imperial River is one lot away, and visible through the upstairs windows. The property also boasts the tallest trees in Bonita Springs.
My Materials
Unlike most builders, I was building the home for myself. I am extremely proud of the results. Hurricane impact windows are used throughout the home. Wide plank pine flooring from Georgia was used on all of the floors. The interior pine doors are all over 100 years old. Beautiful antique hardware was used.
A tankless water heater cuts the power bill by 30%. The canopy of trees further reduces the power bill. I designed and created my own 2" thick concrete countertops. I wanted a Southwestern, warm, leathery look to them, and I got it. I built the stairs out of pine. The spindles are salvaged oak. Two arched mahogany windows were used. The massive front door is a work of art. All of the light bulbs are CF for more energy savings. Power bills have been as low as $60.
Century-old Heart Pine was used for all of the door frames and moulding.
The Results
Casa Poinciana is one of the most distinctive, beautiful, original and unique homes in Southwest Florida. With an open floor plan, master suite and walk-in closet downstairs and 3 bedrooms upstairs, the Casa boasts a little over 2600 sq. ft of usable space. The detached garage adds another bathroom, (for a total of 3). I completed the home in 2009. I can't imagine settling for a cookie-cutter, Tuscan style, blah house, when you could own a masterpiece.
