Trained professionals will guide you in identifying career options that best suit your interests, strengths and skills. Discover the latest trends, employment prospects and salary ranges of skilled trades and occupations that interest you.Canadian Workplace Fundamentals 101: (5 Workshops) Job Search Workshop (2 hours) - What are your soft skills? Talk about the importance of soft skills vs. hard/technical skills in the workplace. Potentially send them a self-assessment to do prior to attending work shop or direct them to a website. In researching companies that they are interested in how can they contribute to the company, how are their soft skills aligned to the Company's requirements? What resources can they use to research companies (Internet, Library directories, annual reports, etc.)? Ask them what information they would need to know about a company. Review how to research specific industries and how to target potential employers. · Resume Writing Workshop (2 hours) - What is the purpose of a resume? (It will not get you a job!) Different kinds of resumes. Format and content. What HR and Management look for when selecting potential candidates for job placement. Tips on getting your resume read and getting an interview (recommend they bring their resume)· Cover Letter Writing Workshop (2 hours) - What is the purpose of a cover letter? (To get you an interview for the position you are seeking.) Different kinds of cover letters. Format and content: What needs to be in the Cover letter for it to be effective? How does it differ from the Resume? Have them bring a job advertisement, how would they write a cover letter that will draw attention to themselves. Common errors cover letter writers make: there are three main ones.· Preparing for the Interview Workshop (2 hours) - what are the common interview techniques and processes, such as 1st & 2nd interviews, panel interviews, behavioral interviews and personal diagnostic tools that employers use to assess candidates.· Preparing for the Interview Workshop (2 hours) - Types of interview questions (e.g. Traditional, Situational). The "SAR/STAR" response to situational/behavioural questions. Sample questions: reasons why they're asked. Could give out some interview questions in advance of this session and have participants write out their answers, then discuss them. Discuss difficult Qs like "Tell me about your weakness(es)." "What kind of salary are you expecting?" "Don't you think you're (under) overqualified for this position?" Illegal interview Q's.· Final Workshop (3 hours) - Summary of previous 3 workshops (share learnings and best practices). Talk to them about building a network, the hidden job market and effective job search methods. Ask them what job search methods they would use/have used. I wouldn't leave "the hidden job market" too late, since about 85% of jobs are not advertised. It could be referred to in the first workshop. How does one access the hidden job market? Hear from company leaders as they share their experience in hiring newcomers to Canada. To register for this event or to find out more information, please fill out the form in the Contact section.
In an effort to provide an avenue for newcomers to connect at a personal level with people who are already established in Canada, we host fun social events throughout the year. Last December 3rd we held a Christmas dinner that was attended by over 100 people. There were lots of fun activities for all the children, though it seemed like the adults were enjoying themselves just as much!Make sure you find out about coming events by filling out the form in the Contact section.
