BMH is located just outside Silver city and nestled in the pines of the Gila National Forest at the base of Burro Mountain. The elevation at the Homestead in southwestern New Mexico is about 6700 feet. Mule deer roam the camp. There are full hookups, boondock, and long term RV sites. Hiking and ATV trails, rock hounding, bird watching, and abandoned mines surround the ranch. Burro Mountain Homestead is open year round. The summers here are sunny and mild., a cool relief from the surrounding desert.
"Once you come up you'll know why it's such a well kept secret"
The lodge was completed in 1914 by Colonel Robert Munro-Fergeson and his wife Isabella. It remained in the family until sold in 1956. During those years the Fergesons hosted numerous dignitaries at the homestead including Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt as well as members of the English and Scottish nobility.
The lodge has a spectacular Great Room with two fireplaces, a large kitchen with a Majestic wood fired stove, six bedrooms, and 2 baths. Today the lodge is used by the Southwestern Camper Ranch members and guests as a meeting room, for special functions and meals. Two of the bedrooms are rental guest rooms. Other rooms are a Craft room, Exercise room, Billiards room, and a Lending library.
The homestead has 29 daily 30 amp full hook-ups plus five 50 amp pull through full hook-up sites. In addition a few boon dock sites are available. We are a a Escapees discount park . We also offer discounts to other RV organization. Of course our members and their guests always enjoy reduced rates. Daily, weekly, and monthly rates are available.
Many functions take place in our covered corral. Campfires, Wednesday night get togethers, etc. There is seating for 200 in the corral. Respect the lands while riding OHVs
Much of New Mexico is designated as public land and administered for multiple uses. With hundreds of miles of backcountry trails, off-highway vehicle use is permitted when it is done in a responsible and safe manner. And thanks to the New Mexico’s new Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Act, recreational pursuits have never been safer.
The Department encourages responsible use of our public lands, use that leaves the land healthy and unspoiled, that protects our traditional uses, custom and culture, wildlife and wildlife habitat, and allows for the continued enjoyment of these lands for our families and future generations.
Click HERE for more information about treating public lands with respect, or visit Respected Access at respectedaccess.org
Please be considerate of the other users of our lands including ranchers and their livestock, wildlife, hikers and mountain bikers. Use the proper equipment that will keep you and your children as safe as possible while riding.
Please respect and obey the laws and rules that are put in place to protect New Mexico's precious land and people, and that help preserve the customs and culture that are deeply woven into our state.
