The Germans from Russia people have an extremely interesting history but often suffered from persecution and violence. Originally they accept the invitation of Catherine the Great, the German Princess, who became the ruler of all of Russia. After Catherine's death, the Russian people became jealous of the positions of the hard working German people. The men were arrested; crops were destroyed or stolen leaving the families in dire straits. Your film, Pick, highlighted the terrible ordeals that our people had to survive and was very relevant to our history. It brought to mind many of the stories we heard as children that our grandparents told about the conditions they had to endure prior to immigrating to Canada. The members of the Society were very touched by your film and the story it told. It was especially relevant as the setting was one of the historic buildings in Bridgeland. Bridgeland was the community that most of the Germans lived in when they first came to Calgary to start a new life. Thank you for choosing to create this film.
