COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
COURSE LIST AND DESCRIPTIONS (scroll down for full list)
A FEW WORDS ABOUT US
Screenprinting. Grade Level: 9-12. One Semester (1 credit). Students will learn the process and skills to screenprint t-shirts and other wearing apparel. Basics of computer graphics will be taught. Additional costs will range from $5-$10.Advanced Screenprinting.Grade level: 10-12. One Semester (1 credit). This course is a more intense study of the techniques used for screenprinting. Freehand and photoshop will be important aspects of the advanced screenprinting course.Commercial Design.Grade level: 9-12. All year (2 credits). This course is a specialized class planned toward careers in the commercial field of art. Emphasis is on design and production methods.Yearbook Graphics.Grade level: 10-12. All year (2 credits). The yearbook is published and produced soley by students and serves as a document that records the activities and interests of all the students at BNL. Students in this course actually create the yearbook.Photography.Grade level: 9-12. One semester (1 credit). This course will introduce students into the wonderful world of photography. Students will learn how to use a 35mm manual camera and the basic techniques of the darkroom. Additional cost for supplies will range from $20-$40.Advanced Photography.Grade level: 10-12. One Semester (1 credit). Students will study techniques to improve their photography. Digital photography will be explored. Advanced Photography beyond level 2 must have the permission of the instructor and a portfolio of work. Students are required to provide camera, film, and photo paper.Digital Photography.Grade level: 9-12. One Semester (1 credit). This class will focus on digital cameras and the use of Adobe Photoshop CS3 to work with and manipulate images. Projects will include taking creative photographs, moving images from camera to computer, and working with Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop projects will range from creating simple color or black and white photographs to creating obviously manipulated computer-based images. Students provide their own digital cameras. Other supplies (such as photo-quality printing paper) are provided.Jewelry Design and Metal Work.Grade level: 9-12. All year (2 credits). The students will explore the beginning process of jewelry design. Strong design will be stressed and drawing will be a necessary part of the class. Casting, stone setting, fusion methods, and finishing processes will consist of both common and precious metals. A portfoilio of prior work is recommended for level 2 and above. Extra expenses will occur exceeding $20 to cover the metals used.Sculpture and Clay.Grade level: 9-12. One semester (1 credit). Students will have the opportunity to design and create three dimensional works of art using a variety of materials such as plaster, clay, found materials, and metal. Emphasis will be placed upon the creative use of materials, proper use of tools and various techniques in the designing of their projects. Sculpture and Stone.Grade level: 9-12. One Semester (1 credit). Students will have the opportunity to design and create three dimensional works of art using a variety of materials such as limestone, plaster, clay, or found objects. Emphasis will be placed upon using proper tools and techniques in the designing and making of projects.Advanced Sculpture.Grade level: 10-12. One Semester (1 credit). Sculpture 1: must be taken in sequence. Students must have the teacher's permission ior must have a "C" or better in Stone Sculpture 1. This course is for students with a serious interest in stone sculpture. The student must demonstrate a high degree of skill level in designing, carving and finishing projects. Ceramics and Pottery.Grade level: 9-12. All Year (2 credits). The student will explore the basic process of creating a finished product with ceramic clay. Hand building clay processes including pinching, coil building, slab, sculpting, and using press molds and drape molds will be taught. A variety of surface decorating techniques as well as how to decorate ceramic pieces using slips, under glazes, oxides and glazes will be explored. Students will work mostly with cone 5-6 stoneware clay and glazes. Throwing on the potters wheel willm be introduced to those students who are interested.Drawing.Grade level: 9-12. All Year (2 credits). The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of pencil drawing. Basic elements and techniques will be covered. This course is for the student that can't draw but would really like to learn.Advanced Drawing.Grade level: 10-12. One Semester (1 credit). At this level, students will be drawing more from their own ideas. This class is for students with a serious interest in drawing. Projects will take several weeks to complete and students will be using pencil as well as other mediaAirbrush And Mural PaintingGrade Level: 9-12. One Semester (1 credit).Students will be exposed to the technique of airbrush in the design of t-shirts, painting of murals, and general illistration. The student should be self-motivated because of the amount of independant work. The student will be expected to provide addition materials and tools.Advanced Airbrush And Mural PaintingGrade Levels: 9-12. One semester (1 credit). Prerequisite: Airbrush grade must be a "c" or higher. Students in this course will advance to the use of double-action airbrush to develop skills that could be used in a career in airbrush or related fields. Emphisis will be on freehand work and skills. Projects include portraits, automotive illustration, license plates, and shop skills of the professional artist. The students will be expected to provie some materials and tools.Advanced Ceramics And PotteryGrade levels: 10-12. All year (2 credits).Prerequisite: Must have completed Ceramics and Pottery with a "c" or better. Students will refine their basic hand building and/or wheel throwing skills. Focus at this level is on the "idea" of a peice and choosing the best technique to achieve it rather than on just learning a new technique. Glaze testing, how to correctly load and fire kilns will be explored in more detail.Advanced Jewelery Design And Metal WorkGrade Levels 10-12. All year (2 Credits).Prerequisite: Jewlery Design and Metal Work grade must be a "c" or better. Students will continue to improve their metal working techniques as they create their own jewlery. New techniques and materials will be addeddas the students is ready to explore them. Projects are very individualized and encourage at this level.Stained GlassGrade level: 9-12. All year (2 credits).The students will explore the beginning process of stained glass. Glass cutting, grinding, soldering, and the copperfoil technique will be taught. Students must pay for expenses beyond class fee. This will be necessary in order to compensate for the high cost of glass. Average cost each semester is usually $20 but may be more depending on glass used in class. Advanced Stained GlassGrade level:10-12. All Year (2 credits)Prerequisite: must have successfully completed Stained Glass with a "C" or better. The student will work on improving their technique as well as other options in glass design. Students will have the opportunity to design original works. Students must pay for any extra expenses beyond the course fee because of the cost of glass. Average cost each semester is usually $20 but may be more depending on Glass used in class. Computer GraphicsGrade Level: 9-12. One semester (1 credit).This class is designed for the students that is interested in the graphics of printing, illustrations, video, or Web design using the computer. The student will learn graphic skills in both raster and Vector based programs and methods of combining these in final product. Students will work with Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand. Photo manipulation, vector graphics, optimizing for the web, and capturing digital images will be covered.Advanced Computer GraphicsGrade Level: 10-12. One Semester (1 Credit).Prerequisite: Must have a "C" or better in Computer Graphics. This course is designed for students interested in developing stronger computer graphics skills in Photoshop. Skills in other graphics programs such as Freehand will also be explored in more depth. Greater emphasis will be placed on design skills and creative thought at this level. Efforts will also be made to involve the student in real life graphic projects in the school and community when possible.
The Bedford North Lawrence High School Art Department has four art teachers. We offer many classes, including traditional ceramics, jewelry, and photography classes, and also classes that may not be offered in other high schools, like stone sculpture and stained glass, airbrush, screenprinting, and digital/computer art classes. A full listing of our courses is to the right.Students in the art department are encouraged to be creative, solve problems, and express themselves through their art. Beginning and advanced classes are both offered in many of our mediums. Students may take an advanced class if they earn a "C" or better in the beginning class.

He has logged in about 30 years teaching art.LYNN DULONG-ULREY teaches art and also runs the school Renaissance Program, which honors academic progress and attendance. CONGRATS ON YOUR 2011 RETIREMENT!LEISA DECKARD has logged in about 20 years teaching art in all grade levels.ERRIN SPALDING has logged in about 10 years teaching art and also is sponsor of the Reflections yearbook.BRITTNEY NEES taught for two years at Logansport High School before coming to Bedford to teach art at BNL in 2011. She takes Mrs. DuLong's place in ceramics and jewelry.
