True poets have a distinctive voice. In this his first book of poetry, Bahati Mabala crafts the personal and political in a very distinctive way, whether speaking with the voice of a raped Congolese girl, or exploring his own relationships in his life. He ranges from the directly political as he speaks of Africa and America, the poor and the rich, to very personal thoughts about his own life.
In every case he brings a refreshing perspective, combining rapper lyrics with more conventional poetry, but always with a critical eye, a self critical eye which peels away the layers of the onion as shown in one of his poems. These are not poems for the easygoing, be prepared for the sting of tears as you peel the onion for yourself, and you will be well rewarded.

My name is Bahati Thomas Dedan Kimathi Mabala & I am from Tanzania, East Africa. I grew up in Dar es Salaam before coming to America for my college education. I speak & write my poems in both kiswahili & english. My thing with writing is, if I cant verbalize it then I'll write it. The beauty of that, well, is that I can be who I want and create characters that express my thoughts & feelings about different issues. To me this is a perfect way to get away with a few things, dont you think so... hahah!!
"The Trail of My Shadows" came about after years of trying to find a medium that I could use to express my thoughts on different social issues. Although I am an introvert, poetry has managed to bring out the extrovert in me. Earlier on I was inspired by music, especially Hip Hop, because it was a kind of music genre that I could relate to. When I started listening to the late Tupac Shakur, and heard how he told his personal stories so vividly, I wanted to do the same. This is when my journey begun, the journey of searching for my inner voice.
Many of my poems are what I would call two to three dimensional. My poems are that way because I believe we're complex beings and so is everything that is around us. I try to talk about more than one issue in one poem; for example in my poem "The Khanga Girl", I talk about the khanga cloth and how it has influenced the culture in East Africa. I also talk about the uses of this khanga cloth and how it has transformed to keep up with the modern world. Through this, I use the Khanga to also talk about the life that many girls live in the village. I am a big fan of abstract art, because one can get so much out of it, in comparison to straight forward ordinary art.
The idea for the title came from the poems themselves, meaning the poems, are a reflection of my thoughts, my life, and the world I see around me. Therefore, each poem is like my shadow that reflects my vision, just like art is a reflection of the society.
I look forward to hearing from all of you, feel free to critic my work and share your thoughts with me. All the best and I hope you all enjoy reading my poems.
