5 Ways the Office Can Be a Lot Like Highschool

September. They should really just rename the entire 30 days period ‘back to school’ time. Between the bombardment of kid-centric ads and TV show themes, it seems like you couldn’t go anywhere this month without hearing the ‘back to school’ bell chime.

All this classroom chatter got us thinking about our younger years. Sure we’ve replaced classrooms for cubicles, student presidents for the C-suite, and chess geeks for… well… developers, but when it comes down to it, is the workplace really all that different from a high school?

We here at Wix wanted to get to the bottom of this, so we’re bringing back one of the best teen movies of all time, to give you the 5 ways the office can really be a lot like high school:

Buzzwords:

Are your tracking the ROIs and KPIs of your snackable content? With all the buzzwords floating around, sometimes it can seem like certain departments speak their own language. Kind of like teenagers. Want to keep up with the cool kid lingo? We’re got you covered, check out these 20 Marketing Buzzwords You Should Know for 2015.

Freshmen:

If anything can make you feel like the first day of school as an adult, it’s stepping into your first day at a new job. Starting at a new place can be a simultaneously an exciting and terrifying experience. The new environment, the new people, the new tasks, ahh! Thankfully, we’re generally more poised and mentally equipped to deal with new school jitters as an adult (usually).

Dress Codes:

Whether it’s written in stone like your old school uniform, or more free flowing like with Wix’s Workplace Fashionistas, pretty much every establishment has a dress code that they abide by.

‘Sick Days’:

Whether you’re coughing up a lung or just need some time for yourself, no matter what stage of your life you’re in, sometimes all you need to regain your sanity is a day off. Go on and take a day to get back to normal, tell your boss Wix said it was ok.

Standing Out:

For many people, both high school and your first real job can be a time for finding your voice. Like the time you joined the varsity badminton league, or when you offered a fresh perspective to your company’s workflow, there’s nothing quite like silencing the haters and going down the path less taken. After all, it’s your unique personality that helped take you from that awkward teenager to the all-star employee you are today.
