The Black Heroes of Science AwardsThe Black Heroes of Science Awards and exhibition produced in partnershipship with Science Oxford for the Oxfordshire Science Festival. The event, the first ever Black orientated event held at Science Oxford, was presented as an awards ceremony of historical and current Black inventors and scientists In Conversation with Karen Stevenson An informal event with Karen Stevenson, the first Black woman awarded a Rhodes scholarship in 1979 to attend the University of Oxford. The event featured discussions, screenings, an exhibition and a Caribbean buffetOxford Preservation Trust Heritage Open Doors Weekend A series of free Black guided heritage walking tours delivered for the Open Doors weekend in 2009, 2010 and 2011.University of Oxford Alumni WeekendA series of specialised walking tours about Black scholars and Black women scholars , delivered as part of the University’'s Hidden Gems programme, for its Alumni weekendBlack Oxford: Untold Stories A Black heritage project which includes the first Black heritage guided walking tour celebrating the University of Oxford Black scholars and a exhibition. THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND FOR HER WORK Pamela Roberts has scooped another award for her work on developing Breaking the Illusions, the southeast first Black media festival. She received the award in the media category at the prestigious 9th Annual European Federation of Black Women Business Owners, which took place at the Governor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, England.Hosted by Rhoneke Philips from London News Network and Kumanie Kwaine from BBC’s Casualty programme, the ceremony was a glittering affair attended by the crème of national and European Black women business owners, celebrities and government ministers.Pamela said that ‘I am delighted that my work and the festival has been recognized both at a national and European level’.Pamela’s work has not only been recognized by the European Federation of Black Women Business Owners but by the Queen of England. Pamela had been commanded by the Mater of the Household to attend the Christmas reception, hosted by the H.R.H. The Queen, as featured in the Queen’s Christmas speech at Buckingham Palace.The reception is for those who have made a significant contribution to national life.Pamela said that ‘I am sill on cloud nine and will be for a long time. I am absolutely thrilled to have met the Queen & Prince Edwards at the Queen’s Christmas reception at Buckingham Palace; this will be a memory that I will treasure for a long time.. Heritage Open Doors WeekendInside the Bridge of Sighs at Hereford College, sitting at the desk of John Wesley in the Wesley Room at Lincoln College and exploring the Cloisters at New College were some of the experiences for visitors on the Black Scholars tour for the Heritage Open Doors Weekend.The Oxford Open Doors weekend, organised by the Oxford Preservation Trust enables the public to have free access to public buildings that are usually restricted to them. A group of twenty people enjoyed the tour and hearing about the University’s Black scholars.SISTAS IN THE SPOTLIGHTA number of prestigious Black women gathered at the Holiday Inn Hotel, High Wycombe, on Thursday 22nd April 2004, for Sistas in the Spotlight and the launch of the Cultural Media Network.Pamela Roberts, Founder and Executive Director of the Network said, ‘this evening sees the exciting launch of an Network that will provide regular screenings, seminars and workshops in the Buckinghamshire region.'Membership of the Network is open to anyone with an interest in media. She continued, the longer-term aim of the Network will be to create initiatives to develop aspiring film makers.The array of speakers related their experiences to a diverse audience Helena Appio, Commissioning Executive Contemporary Factuals and documentaries, BBC Television, explained that an advertisement in a national newspaper advertising a directors training course at the BBC, led to her applying for the course and subsequently working her way up through the corporation to become one of the first Black commissioning executives at the BBC.Celine Loader, publisher and editorial director of ASPIRE magazine, a new magazine for women of colour, journey into the media was as a result of her constantly witnessing the negative imagery of Black women, both nationally and internationally. Celine explained, that whilst working for Microsoft as a strategic marketing executive, she travelled extensively staying in a number of luxurious hotels around the world. She was constantly being asked whether she was an air hostess or worse: a cleaner. This led to her decision to start a magazine to reflect women of colour. Celine said, ‘ASPIRE magazine aims to address the negative image of black women and present the multi-talented and multi-dimensional images of Black women’. Ermina Ochcu, writer and producer, originally qualified in the science field gaining a PhD in neuroscience, before making her transition into the media. She produced a short film which was screened at the last year’s Cannes Film Festival. MOVE OVER BOB - AJA'S HEREUnited Nations Development Program (UNDP) Spokesman on Peace and Poverty for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, performance poet, humanitarian and photographer, AJA is here in England and launch his e-Book and to participate in the 3rd Annual International Black Media Festival in Oxford.AJA launched the e-Book entitled “Don’t Let Me Die” on Launched Tuesday 4th October 2005 at the Barbados High Commission . The e-Book is a volume of poems, perspectives and photographs that captures the human suffering caused by war, social decay, poverty and HIV-AIDS, particularly on children. Between 2003 and 2004, AJA visited a number of war-torn and poverty-stricken countries, where he took the photographs for the e-Book. The national television station of Barbados, the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) also made a documentary of the humanitarian tour. Entitled “Don’t Let Them Die: The Journey of AJA” it features six 30-minute episodes of the countries he visited.AJA presented episodes of the documentary at the 3rd Annual International Black Media Festival in Oxford on Saturday 8th October. His presentation was entitled Evolutionary Poet: Finding Media to tell the Story" and featured a 30-minute excerpt of “Don’t Let Them Die: The Journey of AJA”; the 30-minute episode on Haiti; and a reading of some of his works.Mr. Herbie Yearwood, Barbados Deputy High Commissioner, said, “We are honoured to be hosting the launch of AJA’s e-book at the High Commission. AJA is truly a talented and inspirational person. His commitment and dedication to his art form, and the charity he founded the International Foundation for Peace and Poverty Eradication (IFPPE): www.ifppe.org. illustrates the remarkable person that AJA is”. Pamela Roberts, Founder and Festival Director, said, “I am delighted to be working in association with the Barbados High Commission to host the launch of AJA’s E-book and to have AJA attend the festival. It gives an opportunity for black people and the wider society to see that we have our own very strong role models, especially in the Caribbean, who are making a positive contribution to the war on poverty and HIV-AIDS.Barbadian artist, AJA ( Adisa Jelani Andwele) is one of the leading exponents of performance poetry in the Caribbean. From his emergence as a poet in the 1980’s AJA has focused on many of the world’s problems. The themes of his work include war, social decay and economic suppression, and in particular their impact on children.

Pamela Roberts is the founder and director of Artistry, a social enterprise, set up to develop and deliver arts and media projects to educate, empower and entertain diverse audiences. She is a cultural practitioner engaged in promoting and developing independent Black films and filmmakers from the African Diaspora, and conceiving, developing and producing Black cultural heritage projects which celebrates and acknowledges Black heritage contributions and achievements.

Oxford University has attracted and produced many of the most original thinkers over the past several hundred years. It boasts heads of states, academics, writers, actors, scientists, philosophers and many other luminaries as its alumni. On any official university tour there you can hear about the history of the colleges, the famous alumni – Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher – to name a few, but what about its black scholars?Oxford University had many African and African Caribbean students pass through its esteemed colleges throughout history. Given Britain’s once imperial status, it’s not unusual to suppose that young and women from her colonies would want to come and study there. And come they did. Black Oxford: Untold Stories celebrates Black students that attended Oxford University at the turn of the 20th century, and in later years. Black Oxford: Untold Stories, the first Black heritage guided walking tour of the University of Oxford was launched on the 5th October 2006 at the Oxford University Natural History Museum.

The exhibition gives an overview of the scholars featured on the walking tour; it includes archival material, footage and memorabiliaThe exhibition is constantly evolving and growing to include new features such as Voices, audio, and where possible, visual recordings of previous scholars talking about their experiences of being at Oxford University. Over the past several hundred years, the University of Oxford has attracted and produced many of the world’s most original thinkers. Book our Black Oxford Tour to hear their previously untold stories of the University of Oxford many Black scholars.The tour lasts for two hours and is delivered by accredited Black Oxford Tour Guides. The Tour features the lives and contribution of Oxford University Black scholars from Africa, the Caribbean, the USA and England, and includes entrance to a number of colleges. Tours take place at weekends between June and November. The morning tour departs at 11.00am. The afternoon tour departs at 2.00pm. COSTSThe Black Oxford Tour costs £7.00 per adult and £3.00 for children under 16 years old. Cost includes admission to colleges open* to tour guides on that day. Most colleges are open between 2.00pm and 5.00pm.
