About Us
Founded in 2007 by Yejide KMT, the mission of the Black Mommy Circle is three-fold:
1. To equip black mothers with the information and tools they need in order to be confident and empowered as mothers.
2. To support black mothers in their decisions on their mothering journey.
3.To provide a safe space for mothers to speak their minds, learn, grow and teach to and from other mothers.
Our Purpose
We have been socially engineered to believe that the people who profit off of our ignorance as mothers are the same people that we should trust with our children's health, education, socialization, nutrition, discipline, medication, entertainment and every other aspect of life. Consequently, black mothers have been made to view themselves incapable as an ever expanding group of 'experts' pushes the voice of the black mother to the margins.
We are purposely kept ignorant of safe and inexpensive alternative methods of wellness, discipline, nutrition, schooling and socialization. Our options are deliberately limited so that we will rely on a system whose best interests are profit and not our children.
The Black Mommy Circle is in existence to empower black mothers and protect the right of the empowered black woman to be a mother to her child. As black women, we know that this bond has before been too easily severed for the sake of profit and economics. Black Mommy Circle demands the right to Kujichagalia (Self-determination) for ourselves and our families in the areas of health, economics, spirit, education, nutrition and in every other way.

Hey beautiful mommies! Yejide KMT here, founder and director of the Black Mommy Circle. Here is where you will be able to find my latest interviews, musings, quotes, tips, tricks and ideas... some mommy related, and some not.
I am so excited about the things that have been happening around here lately. I've been making a lot of good connections and some good friendships. In between my job, my family, and my circle, my schedule has been pretty hectic, and I haven't had much time for me.
So I decided to just do ONE thing for myself, and I signed up for bellydancing! I love it so much, I'm going to the Bellydancers of Color Association conference at the end of May. I can't wait to learn how to pop lock and bellydance at the same time.
In other news, I've been looking for a few good patches of nettles so that I can make some nettle tincture... seen any around?
Stinging Nettle is called stinging netlle because it stings you when you touch it! The sting doesn't compare to the benefits that you can get from eating this widespread weed. Stinging nettles are rich in vitamin A,C,D, Iron, Potasium, Manganese and Calcium. They are extremely high in vitamin K, and contain rare trace minerals such as cobalt, phosphorus, copper, sulfur and silica. It's been said they taste like spinach when cooked. It seems they are the second-most used herb for pregnancy and general good woman health. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm game, anybody else?

I love great quotes. Especially Revolutionary Quotes. here is my quote of the month.
"It is the education we are now giving in Africa and the social values on which it is based, which is creating the people we condemn....It is our education which is instilling into the young boys and girls the idea that their education confers a price tag on them and which makes them concentrate on this price tag."

Here is a video I ran across today by Nigerian Author Chimamanda Adichie, talking about the danger of a single story. A lot of what she said really struck a chord with me, and about the way I am viewed as a woman of Afrikan decent in Pittsburgh, and the ways I view others. Let me know your thoughts!

This is a video that always touches my emotions when I see it. Be forewarned, it is a little graphic, so you may want to send little ones out of the room. The video is "No Handlebars" by Floblots.
