One Step Up is a project for the city of Raleigh, NC that aims to expand the downtown area while dealing with the homelessness problem that is prevalent in the area. One Step Up is a program that provides many services to the homless allowing them to be effective members of society. It provides them with medical, educational, and job placement services. The farms on the south facade of the site provide food for both the farmers market and to feed the homeless in the shelter. The raised walkway provides access from downtown to the adjacent greenway promoting a safe walkable and bikeable route into downtown.

By creating structures that connect with different local aspects of a region’s culture, architecture can begin to benefit the surrounding built and natural environments. This type of development can be used to create a new urban signature for an area that promotes sustainable practices as they relate to the local economy, ecology, and culture. Integrating sustainability into the culture and infrastructure of the area will ultimately create a new lifestyle that everyone can benefit from. Society has constructed buildings for thousands of years with little regard for the limits of our resources and energy. However in the twenty first century as a result of exponential increases in both population growth and energy usage, we are now faced with dwindling resources. Technology has become a two sided sword. We have used it to make our lives unbelievably easier. However, it has also created an addiction to fossil fuels and polluted our environment. The modern city has become an energy consuming machine made of buildings that rely on massive heating and air conditioning systems and vehicles that guzzle gas. Scientists have speculated that our continued carbon emissions have contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer that shields Earth from the Sun’s ultraviolet rays. We must begin to use technology to ease the strain we have unknowingly placed on our planet. Man’s existence and consumption on earth has been almost parasitic. We have the means to change this relationship. It is just a matter of implementing the right strategies to change our current lifestyle. The field of Architecture must begin to change the relationship between man, the built environment, and nature. This premise of this thesis is to change this relationship into a symbiotic relationship. Symbiotic architecture is the link between man and nature that benefits the economical, ecological, and cultural environments so that the built environment can live in harmony with nature through intelligent design and resource management. The investigation of this thesis premise will be organized into three aspects: ecology, economy, and culture. The concept of symbiosis will provide a filter through witch these three categories will be analyzed. The construction of new buildings that minimize energy usage is not enough. We need to create buildings to live and work in that actually produce renewable energy, effectively manage waste, provide habitat corridors for native wildlife, and use recycled and renewable materials. Each of these systems will be designed to create a symbiotic relationship with various aspects of their surroundings. Within this architectural concept, symbiosis occurs on many different levels. On a macro scale the building and the ecological environment will benefit each other. On a smaller scale the building and the surrounding culture and economy will benefit each other. On a micro scale the systems within the building will work in conjunction with one another, reducing the energy needs for each individual system and creating a single unified system. The energy production systems will produce more energy than the building demands. This will provide excess energy to the surrounding power grid, lowering the fossil fuel demands of the surrounding area. The waste management system will be integrated into a living machine that naturally treats wastewater. This will feed vegetation while eliminating our waste. The green roof will insulate the interior spaces while providing the proper natural conditions for native flora and fauna, benefiting both humans and the surrounding ecosystem. The use of local materials will create a symbiotic relationship with the surrounding economy and, the addition of attractive public spaces will attract and interact with the existing culture of the area. On a micro scale this thesis will combine sustainable techniques so that all the systems benefit each other. The PV panels will help heat the hot water, the hot water will help heat the interior spaces and the interior spaces are shaded by the PV panels. By combining energy production, water, and HVAC, the building begins to create symbiotic relationships between systems where they all work in harmony with each other and the environment. This loop makes each system work less in order to achieve their desired outcomes. Instead of each system working independently they create a symbiotic relationship that produces a united system that performs as a single entity. This project would serve as an urban infill prototype that could be implemented in areas where clean energy and environmental awareness are in high demand. The design process can also be symbiotic because it works in a cyclic nature where one move informs the next. The site informs the form of the structure, the form of the structure informs the mechanical and electrical systems, and the systems respond to the site conditions. The materiality and programmatic design also creates a symbiotic relationship. The ecology of the area provides economic stimulus. The economic stimulus promotes social growth. And the social growth, that this thesis premise promotes, completes the symbiotic cycle by benefiting ecology. This loop illustrates how architecture is a key tool in closing the symbiotic connection between man and nature.

What Architecture Means To Me

Architecture is an extremely powerful entity in itself. It is an evolving combination of art, culture, and technology that serves many functions in society. However, this power comes with responsibility. Architecture is partially responsible for defining how we live our lives. It can control our behavior and define how we interact within our environment. It is not just the buildings and spaces that we occupy. It encompasses a wide range of social and economic components that make it a part of our culture. My thesis entitled “Architectural Symbiosis: Creating a Mutually Beneficial Relationship with the Surrounding Economy, Ecology, and Culture” examines how architecture can give back to its surroundings. My thesis proposes to repair a damaged site, use local materials, connect to public transportation, treat its own waste, produce its own power, use native vegetation for habitat corridors, and promote a new cultural identity that is economically, environmentally, and socially conscious. This is how I view architectural design. With the proper research and planning in the design phase, the needs of the client can align with the needs of the building's surroundings, creating multiple symbiotic relationships.
