Do you have what it takes to get into medical school? Our brothers do! Join a professional fraternity that helps you develop your potential as a successful medical school applicant and build a brotherhood lasting beyond college. Some of our brothers are also working towards dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and other health and science professions. Our fraternity has access to tutoring and old notes to help active brothers achieve their maximum potential during their stay at Berkeley. We also get discounts at Kaplan and other test prep centers in preparation for the MCAT or DAT, for example. Our members help the community through service events for organizations such as the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Berkeley's Alzheimer's Center, and Glide Memorial Church. Finally, we offer sponsored professional events to help both actives and non-actives understand the premedical process, bringing them one step closer to fulfilling their dreams. Please check back over the next few days to see our actives and events, and stop by our table on Sproul Plaza during rush week if you have any questions. We hope to see you soon!
ABOUT
HISTORY
OPENING NEW DOORS
Fall 2003 marked a turning point in SMD's history. After nearly ten years since its conception, the Fraternity took its first step toward expansion. Under the guidance of Pledge Master Edward Po and Pledge Father Sam Soltani, 20 premedical undergraduates from the University of California, Berkeley, became the first members of the Beta Chapter. With the creation of a new chapter and the crossing of the Berkeley Charter Class, the Fraternity underwent a period of reorganization. A Constitutional Committee was formed to revise the Constitution and By Laws, and an Incorporation Committee was formed to oversee the creation of Sigma Mu Delta, Inc.
Sigma Mu Delta was founded by eleven pre-medical undergraduates of the University of California at Davis on February 9, 1994. With the shared goal of forming a bond between pre-medical students on campus and of motivating each other in their pursuit of becoming physicians, the eleven founding fathers created a fraternity that was based upon the principles of Brotherhood, Education, and Dedication. These ideals were first recognized by three of the fraternity's founding brothers: Roger Fong, Duc Tran, and Loc Trieu. As they struggled in the process of preparing for the MCAT, a strong bond of friendship was established. Even after the MCAT, their support for one another continued; there was an unselfishness of teaching, learning, and sharing between them. No longer did any of them feel alone in their journey towards medical school. Soon after, having realized the benefits of sharing knowledge and experience among peers, the three decided to expand their circle of friendship to the eleven young men who would later form Sigma Mu Delta. Their common struggle was the building of a new pre-health fraternity based on those three principles of Brotherhood, Education, and Dedication. Each founding member contributed their time and effort on different tasks to create a foundation for the fraternity. Together they wrote a constitution, a pledge manual, and made specific offices. The founding fathers established the rituals and symbols of the fraternity, and developed the ceremonies of initiation and activation, which were to be carried out during each pledge term thereafter. The eleven founding fathers of Sigma Mu Delta hoped to create a strong foundation for future brothers of the fraternity to rely upon as pledges and actives.
THE LEGACY LIVES ON
The history of Sigma Mu Delta is still in the writing, and as each pledge crosses to attain active status, they will continue the rich traditions of excellence and commitment that their predecessors had created in the past.

Why Join?
* Networking - The brothers of SMD are well integrated in many areas of the Berkeley community. We have helped many fellow brothers get positions in private labratories and doctor shadowing.*Academic Improvement - Nearly all brothers have taken all of the premed prerequisites and are willing to tutor others. We also have access to a large test file as well as past notes.* Get Into Med School - As a premedical fraternity, nearly all of our brothers have a common goal of going to medical school. Brothers who are in med school and those who are in the process of applying offer a wealth of knowledge on how to get in and survive.* Great Memories - We at SMD believe working hard warrants playing hard. We host BBQs and parties throughout the semester to relax and have a great time.* Be A Part of Something New - The Berkeley chapter is fairly young, but is growing fast. We are making headway into the surrounding community and building a strong reputation. By becoming a member, you can play a part in shaping SMD's future.

FAQ
FAQ
1. What Happens After Rush? After the events held during rush week and the brothers have had ample time to get to know who you are, the fraternity holds professional interviews for all candidates. Brothers will evaluate candidates based on how they contribute to our three principles: brotherhood, education, and dedication. Selected candidates will receive a bid, a formal invitation to join the fraternity as an associate member. Should the candidate accept the bid, they will be invited to a commencement ceremony along with fellow candidates who accepted the bid to become the Omicron pledge class of SMD.2. I have entered the pledging process. Now what? The pledge term is an 8-week session within which pledges get to understand what it means to be a brother of SMD. It is utilized to create strong bonds between pledge brothers and actives. There will be many enjoyable and memorable experiences, but also periods when much work is to be done.3. I've heard about horrible things happening to frat pledges. We do not believe that belittling or harming members of our fraternity creates strong brotherhood; therefore, hazing is forbidden.4. Will the pledge term be "hard?"The pledge term is designed to build character and produce a well rounded med-school applicant out of our pledges. This of course will require pledges to work out of their "comfort zone". However no pledge will ever be demanded to perform the impossible. If you work hard during this period, the benefits that come out of it will far outweigh the effort put into it.5. I'm afraid that the pledge term will require too much of me and my grades will consequently drop.As a professional academic fraternity, we have designed the pledge term to have exactly the opposite effect. The pledge term will strengthen the pledge in many aspects as a pre-med student. Required study hours, research of the med school process, among other things will boost grades as well as knowledge for entering medical school. Pledges also have access to our fraternity's notes and tests bank from other actives who have taken the class.6. What happens after the pledge term?Once the pledge term is completed successfully, each pledge will be formally initiated into the fraternity as an active brother.
