Welcome...
The aim of this website is to be used to supplement independent learning, provide students with resources and key information to help all boys succeed in Design and Technology.
Ben Collyer L6 - Sustainable lab stool
Some of the Best of the Best from recent years! Congratulations to all the boys featured!
When doing D&T homework think about the following key words.
Composition - The make up of your work. Using hand drawn, computer images or borders, hand written or typed text will give you interesting and varied composition
Layout - Where you position things (images, text etc) on the page. Is it easy to understand. Is it visually interesting and show off key information and/or designs.
Linework - We use a variety of line work in design. Ranging from light lines to help 'scaffold' (plan out) a drawing or a border, to thicker lines which we use to make a drawing look more 3D. To create thicker lines you grip you pencil harder. Grip your pencil softly. Its not about pushing harder or lighter on the paper!
Scale - The size of the image or text, in relation to the piece of paper you are working on.
Colour / Contrast - Colour makes an image/design more visually interesting. Using colour and linework techniques can provide tone, which can make a design look more 3D. Contrasting colours make a drawing/design/text stand out!
Aesthetics - Is all of the above combined
Good composition + Good layout + Good linework + Good scale + Good colour/contrast = An Aesthetically pleasing piece of work
REMEMBER.....
Kit: A4 Sketch pad, D&T Apron, 2H / HB Pencil, Rubber, Sharpener, 300mm (rigid) ruler, colour pencils, black fine line pen,
Homework: Always A4 (portrait). Drawings in pencil
Instructions for drawing the title block are below. Measurements are in millimetres.
Ensure your name is written in block capitals and touches both lines.
Before you begin, remember to relax. There’s nothing worse than sketching when stressed out. Stress will kill your creativity, and the natural flow of things.
Linework
Lines come in different thicknesses or weights. Depending on the tool you’re using, you may get a heavier or lighter line. Line weight is a means of using heavier lines to bring important details to the “forefront” or attention of the viewer of a sketch. Proper use of line weights or thickness when sketching, can help you communicate important details such as overlap and depth.
Remember the harder your grip the pencil the harder/darker the line
An ellipse is a circle in perspective. It is one of the hardest technique to get right! Bad elipsese look awful.
An ellipse has two axes, the major axis and the minor axis. The minor axis divides the ellipse into two equal halves across the narrowest dimension. The major axis divides the ellipse across the longest dimension. The major and minor axes are ALWAYS at 90 degrees or perpendicular to each other at the center of the ellipse.
Year 7. As most students who join Wilson's school have not taken part in Design & Technology (D&T), therefore the aim of year 7 is to develop students design capability and literacy.
The key learning aims for D&T can be found... INSERT LINK
Year 8. Students now have a good understanding of all basic tools and process within D&T. The focus of year 8 is to promote students independent application of skills learnt in Yr7 through focused 'design and make' assingments.
Year 9. Students now have a good understanding of all tools and process within D&T and are begining to understand more complex manufacture process. The focus of year 9 is to prepare students for the start of their GCSE midway through Yr9
Year 10. Students should be well underway with their GCSE Controlled assessment folder. This will rung in tandem with practical based theory lesson to continue to suppliment and develop their understanding.
Year 11. Students should be completing their controlled assesment folders. Focus will shift from controlled assesment to practical based theory and examination practice.
Comments section... this is your chance to leave any good websites or images etc that you find to help eveyone in D&T
