GEORGE PAV Professional Secondary School for Veterinary Medicine Prof. Dr. George Pavlov is situated in a region where the main priority in the economic development is agriculture and food industry. It is characterized with high unemployment and constant immigration. Some pupils have one or two unemployed parents and others parents who work in a bigger city or abroad. This creates preconditions for difficulties in the pupils adaptation after graduating from school and their professional realization. Therefore the pupils have low motivation to gain new knowledge and skills.

PARIS - GENERAL SECONDARY SCHOOL “JULES VALLÈS”

The General Secondary School Jules Vallès is located in one of the most disadvantaged areas of Vitry-sur-Seine, in the South Eastern suburbs of Paris. The area is an industrial zone along the river Seine and its population is mostly composed of immigrants and working class families, with problems of unemployment and social insertion. Many communities are present with a majority from Eastern Asia, Italy, Portugal, Africa and North Africa. For this school population, the European Partnerships and this kind of projects are a good opportunity to open to other cultures, improve foreign languages and develop skills and learnings for their future integration and as European citizens.
GERMANY

SIMMERN - HERZOG-JOHANN-GYMNASIUM

Simmern is a country town in an economically underdeveloped region. It is surrounded by the rivers Moselle, Rhine and Nahe and the towns of Koblenz, Mainz and Trier are nearby. To find jobs people drive to the towns mentioned above, sometimes even further to Frankfurt. There are a lot of migrants with a German origin from Russia in our area. Furthermore, there are families of Turkish origin in our region. They came in the 1960s. At our secondary school we have interested and motivated pupils. Migrants with a German ancestry coming from Russia integrate well and are successful students at our school. Pupils with a Turkish background should attend our school to a greater degree, but very often Turkish parents do not place such an importance on learning and therefore send their children to school with a non-academic qualification.

GESUALDO - ISITUTO STATALE DI ISTRUZIONE SUPERIORE – GESUALDO

The Istituto di Istruzione Superiore of Gesualdo (Italy) is located in Alta Irpinia, a disadvantaged area in the South of Italy, characterised by the presence on the territory of small-medium size companies with growing needs of qualified personnel with foreign language skills. The school population is formed by pupils coming from disadvantaged families, involved in farming or small retailing activities with a very small knowledge about the European context (institutions, cultures and habits of the different EU countries, ). The participation in Comenius projects gives the opportunity to our pupils to enhance their awareness of being active members of a wider community, the European Union, grounded on common values like democracy, solidarity, peace and justice but which is also enriched by the diversity and peculiarity of each country.

CZESTOCHOWA - LICEUM AKADEMICKIE AKADEMII POLONIJNEJ

The Academic High School is a privite school with only 45 pupils. It is situated in Częstochowa, in south Poland. Our school has a unique, friendly atmosphere. Small classes (each class has about 15 pupils) ensure an individual attention. Częstochowa is a medium-sized town with about 250 000 inhabitants. The town doesn`t offer many job opportunities after studies. Many young people are forced to move to bigger cities in south Poland (Katowice, Kraków). Concerning this fact, the main aim of the school is to offer an education which consistently helps our pupils to realise their own potential, equipping them to go out into an ever changing world with confidence and composure.

FARO - ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA JOÃO DE DEUS

The secondary school is situated in Faro, the capital of the Algarve. This is a region dedicated to the tourism industry where succeeding at school is not always the most important thing. Students are not very motivated to learn and many of them have already experienced failure at school. The number of students with problems of discipline is growing. Work and the effort necessary to change the society is not valued, neither are knowledge and culture in general, or even the cultural roots.Professional training, updating and competence are concepts which do not mean a lot to a population who mostly lives from seasonal and not skilled work. On the other hand, the Algarve is a region where different cultures meet: not only tourists, who usually stay and become residents, but also immigrants from the former Portuguese colonies (PALOPS) and more recently from the Eastern countries.

TORRE PACHECO - C.E.C VIRGEN DEL PASICO

Virgen del Pasico is a semi-private school in Torre Pacheco, Murcia. It is a new integrated school with all the levels from infant to Bachillerato. Torre Pacheco is a small town of approximately 22,000 inhabitants. It is a town which has experienced one of the biggest demographic growing in the Region of Murcia in the last years. The agriculture development has originated the integration of the immigrant labour force, being domestic in the first years and foreign in the last years. The settling of the immigrant families in Torre Pacheco has originated a rise in the population, as well as an increase in birth rate. Considering the geographical situation of Torre Pacheco, the localization of the school responds to the schooling demand of the area, which apart from the near residential urbanizations it is increased by the attendance of students from other neighbour villages. The economic activity of the town is agriculture characterized by agricultural cooperatives and also some businessmen with small productions. Industry is also an important part of the economy in the area, being foodstuffs and drinks the most important, and also lamps, agricultural machines, animal food and metallic products factories. Tourism is also an important activity for the town due to its proximity to the sea, Mar Menor. The town has some entertainment and leisure facilities such as public centres, libraries, exhibition halls, sport centres, golf course, tennis club, swimming-pool, etc. The communications of the town are very good due to the wide web of local roads, railways, proximity to San Javier airport and Cartagena harbour. The small and medium-sized companies need a lot of manpower, which leads to a medium-class society. The families of the students attending the school Virgen del Pasico belong to a medium socio-cultural background: service, factory, building workers. There are also some foreign families that have come to Torre Pacheco looking for a job and have their children in our school. These families are mainly from Morroco, South-America, China and India with a small but growing number from Great Britain and Germany who live in the residential urbanizations. Due to the big amount of job in the town, both parents work full-time, so family education falls on the grandparents in most of the cases. Families collaborate actively with the school through different activities such as socialising meetings, trips, conferences, festivities, which makes them be actively involved in their childrens education.

ISTAMBUL - INONU ANATOLIAN TECHNICAL-TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

INÖNÜ ANADOLU TEKNIK-TEKNIK VE ENDÜSTRI MESLEK LISESI is located in a socially and economically disadvantaged area of Istanbul, one of the poorest regions of Istanbul. Students attending this vocational school all belong to low social class families. They choose this school because they can get a job immediately after graduating. Most of them have no chance to involve any social activities. The risk of social exclusion is really high for most of them and school is the only institution which can do something to prevent it. There are also some learners with special needs due to physical or mental handicap.
