Blind Brook Students Spread Holiday Cheer By Serving Their CommunityBy Nikta DaijavadDecember 21, 2011Westchester Head Start Glove, Hat, and Scarf DriveJunior Renee Mango has organized her third consecutive glove, hat, and scarf drive for children in grades K through 5. Mango decided to bring the drive to Blind Brook after working with Family Services of Westchester, a not-for-profit organization, in the summer of 2009. She became involved with the organization as a result of her familys longstanding dedication to it; her motherpreviously served on its Board of Directors for five years. There, she met members of the organization working on its Head Start program, designed to improve the educational readiness of children in low-income families, and was inspired to help the cause by providing children with the gloves, hats, and scarves they need to go outside for recess during the winter months. The Radio: A Driver's Worst Enermy By Hallie Parker

This is a 2,000 pound killing machine. You must be careful, were the first words that came out of my fathers mouth when he took me to an empty parking lot and taught me how to drive. His words ring through my head each and every time I start the engine and hit the road, as I have come to learn the dangerous implications of being responsible for a car. This is a 2,000 pound killing machine. You must be careful, he said, before even handing me the keys.To a teenager, driving is an emblem of freedom, a watershed experience marking the beginning of independence. When we first pass our road test, the power and authority that supplement driving a car excites us to no end. But what most 16 and a half-year olds neglect to consider is that the road is no safe haven. The radio, if misused, can be a danger to us all.Consider a teenage boy driving his parents new BMW home from school. He rolls down all four windows and amplifies the radio volume when teen icon Eminems classic hit Lighters begins to play. The boy raps along, feeling the rhythm and words of his favorite song rush through his veins. Just moments later, his speedometer reaches 55 miles per hour. As he listens, dopamine is released into the pleasure center of his brain, and the music enlivens him. The boy does not slow down. According to Warren Brodsky, a researcher at Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, a driver listening to loud, fast-tempo music is extremely prone to speeding, accidents and risk-taking on the road. Rowdy tunes encourage drivers to take chances, making them twice as likely to swerve through traffic or run a red light.As a songs tempo increases, our brains are forced to process both the radios audio signals, and, of course, what is what is happening on the road. Helen Beh, a member of the Department of Psychology at the University of Sydney, claims that a drivers reaction time to objects in the periphery may be delayed up to 100 milliseconds, given that loud and/or fast music is disrupting his or her focus. Although it may seem insignificant, 100 milliseconds is just enough time for a teenage boy driving 55 miles per hour through a school zone to instantaneously murder a peer.It is evident that music is controlling; it is a powerful source that affects our mood, thoughts and biological processes, often in positive ways. The Mozart Effect, a theory supported by the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, states that listening to music on a daily basis can improve a human beings intelligence and spatial reasoning skills. Similarly, The American Society of Hypertension, the largest organization of hypertension researchers and health care providers in the nation, reported that daily exposure to 30 minutes of classical, Celtic or raga music can even help reduce high blood pressure. It seems as though music is spoken about, reported on and researched from a more positive standpoint, more often than it is from a negative, causing a skew in societal perception. Music and driving form an extremely hazardous combination, one that is overlooked by new and experienced drivers alike.The road is an unpredictable place; it is filled with those who drive above the speed limit, under the influence, and even without a seatbelt. A blasting radio, which drowns out the sound of nearby honks and emergency sirens, adds nothing but chaos to the already perilous streets, highways and bridges we travel on daily. The issue at hand is complex, but its solutions are simple: please, let us begin making the road a safer place by listening to Eminem at a reasonable volume.

Congress Update

By Jason RosenbergDecember 21, 2011The Blind Brook High School Congress has been busy with a number of new goals this year, and has already helped to bring back bake sales to the relief of many students. Many club members worried that without bake sales, their clubs would not have enough funding. Bake sales were originally prohibited this year in order to comply with a New York State school wellness policy. Congress tried to resolve this problem through discussions with the school faculty and administration. A bake sale committee was created to help find a solution. "The committee met with Ms. Healy, discussed the New York State guidelines, and decided that a bake sale once a week would be fine, said sophomore Ross Jablon," who headed the committee. One bake sale is now allowed every Wednesday. The clubs bake sales, however, must be scheduled in advance.Congress has also worked with the Board of Education and the administration in order to expedite the incorporation of more technology into Blind Brook. Congress recently had a breakfast with the Board of Education to discuss this topic, and continues to discuss the use of technology throughout the school district with Blind Brook Director of Technology Colin Byrne. Additionally, Congress is debating underclassmen gym exemptions, especially for the juniors. Currently, only seniors participating in varsity sports are allowed to miss gym. Yet, many underclassmen have voiced that they would greatly enjoy the extra time in their schedule created by a gym exemption. Congress and faculty members remain divided on the issue, and members of the faculty remain hesitant."Im on the fence about whether there should be exemptions for juniors," said Writing Center Director and Congress member Rita Gianfrancesco. "I dont want people to sign up for a sport just to get out of gym." After a successful career fair last year, in which students were able to see what each profession entailed, Congress is in the midst of planning the event for this year. However, Congress does plan on making some improvements, such as trying to cut down the time of each session from 40 minutes to 20 minutes, allowing for double the amount of presentations. "Some presenters didnt have enough to talk about for 40 minutes. We want students to learn about a wider variety of careers," explained Gianfrancesco.Congress is studying its own effectiveness as well. "We feel as if some of our recommendations havent been taken into consideration," said Nikta Daijavad, the president of Congress. In addition, Congress wants more input and suggestions from the student body.

Senate Update

By Sarah HaberDecember 21, 2011The Blind Brook High School Senate has been hard at work this year in producing and planning many programs. They have already been successful in organizing the annual homecoming pep rally to recognize all of the fall varsity teams. The Senate has always prided itself on the numerous contributions to charity organizations that it has made throughout the years. This year, Senate has already organized a handful of successful fundraising activities. A breast cancer awareness day was planned, with students wearing pink to school and donating money to senators at the front doors. The contributions, amounting to $133, were donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a leading breast cancer awareness and research foundation.I was really surprised and happy with the amount of money we were able to raise, said junior Ilana Bruckman, who played a large role in organizing the fundraiser. It was great that Blind Brook students were so willing to contribute to such a worthy cause. Senate also partook in a fundraiser for UNICEF, which provides food and healthcare services to children in poor countries throughout the world. Senators throughout the school essentially trick-or-treat for UNICEF, collecting donations from other students. The event was organized by a Senate committee headed by junior Lara Cohen, and was successful in raising over $100 for UNICEF.Due to their success in raising money for charitable causes in recent years, the students in Senate would like to incorporate a new charity into next years fundraising plan. Senate has also coordinated a much needed blood drive within the Blind Brook community. Senior Victoria Denti headed the blood drive committee, which organized the event through White Plains Hospital. Many students, parents, and faculty members donated blood to the hospital.It was a great year for the blood drive, said senior and Senate president Casey Linder. The large amount of blood donations we received far exceeded my expectations.Upcoming events include the annual pep rally for the schools winter varsity sports teams, the homecoming dance, and Spirit Week organization and decorating. Each year, the Senators devote much of their effort to organizing and informing students about these activities. Blind Brook students enjoyed last years Spirit Week themes and Mardi Gras dance, and they hope to plan a Spirit Week and homecoming dance that top last years events.Were looking forward to the rest of the year, said Linder. We have a lot of great ideas and activities planned, and were excited to share them all with the rest of the school.

The Midterm Policy Under Fire

By Rachel Simon December 21, 2011As January approaches, the Blind Brook student body and administration continue to debate the policy regarding the midterms that will occur in the middle of that month. The issue has been brought to Congress, which has discussed the policy in recent meetings with the administration in order to reach a conclusion on the manner in which Blind Brook High School should conduct its midterms. Last year, a new midterm policy was brought to Blind Brook; in accordance with the policy, midterms were extended to all core classes. High school principal Gina Healy was informed of the policy change by former interim principal Vincent Galasso, who decided that midterms should be a requirement in all classes. Healy had experienced a similar policy in the two high schools she previously worked in. My understanding was that this policy change had happened before I arrived, said Healy. I had come from a place where midterms were already a part of the curriculum, so when Mr. Galasso said we were going to give them it did not strike me as something that would cause a great deal of controversy.Healy introduced the new policy to the students and faculty at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. Despite mixed reactions to the implementation of such a policy, Healy believed that extending midterms would yield positive results. I think the idea behind it is that it provides an important gauge of where students are in terms of being able to synthesize information from a course, said Healy. Midterms give teachers a barometer of sorts so that they can adjust their instruction to better the students. It is also a way to have students pull the materials together and understand the big picture.The midterm policy has been discussed in Congress meetings throughout December. Some students, including Congress president Nikta Daijavad, argue that requiring teachers to give midterms creates a stressful situation for students and limits the amount of time students can spend studying for more difficult midterms.Students are being spread thin on their study time. Five tests in five days is simply too much for students, said Daijavad at the December 16 Congress meeting. Many student representatives spoke from last years experiences, explaining that they felt that teachers assigned unnecessary midterms simply to meet the new requirement. It should be up to the teacher to decide if there should be a midterm or not. They run the class and they should know if their students are ready to take the midterm, said junior student representative Eric Handelman at the meeting.Blind Brook is one of the top schools in the country. We have great teachers. If they dont think we need a midterm, they should be able to make the decision, added sophomore representative Ross Jablon. However, members of the faculty and administration argued that, as professionals working in a larger institution, teachers are required to comply with the new midterm policy. I dont think that the decision is up to the teachers. I see this as part of their job, because its part of the curriculum, said Healy. Midterms are valuable learning experiences and should be taken seriously.As debate continued, student representatives began to motion for a recommendation on Congress behalf that it should be up to the teachers to determine if a midterm is appropriate for their class. While many students voiced support for such a motion, a formal vote was never taken.The December 16 meeting remained inconclusive in terms of the midterm policy, and questions remain among the students and faculty. Among these is the possibility of creating a uniform grading policy, in which midterms will hold the same weight in all classes.Its frustrating that, now that students have a midterm in each class, some tests count more than others. A midterm of equal length will count as two tests in one class, and 10 percent of your grade in another, said junior Brielle Farruggio. A uniform policy may solve the issue of students dedicating more time to one midterm than another.Healy said that, before any decisions can be made in creating a uniform grading policy, it is important to first understand the reasoning of each department in establishing the grading method they currently have. The midterm discussion will continue at the next Congress meeting, and eventually a formal vote will be taken to settle the issue. As of now, the current policy will remain unless Congress and the administration decide otherwise.

Blind Brook Students Spread Holiday Cheer By Serving Their Community By Nikta Daijavad December 21, 2011

Westchester Food Bank Canned Food DriveIt is the second year in a row that high school office assistant Phyllis Carapella has chosen to organize the middle and high school portions of a canned food drive for the district. Any and all canned goods collected will be donated to the Food Bank for Westchester. First-grade teacher Linda Greco has organized the elementary school portion of the drive.The Food Bank for Westchester was created by the New York State Union of Teachers (NYSUT). The Blind Brook canned food drive was created as a result of the Blind Brook Employees Local 4060 Unions involvement with NYSUT, which inspired Linda Greco to begin the drive in the elementary school seven years ago. The Food Bank, located in Millwood, distributes food to over 250 shelters, churches, soup kitchens, pantries, community action programs, and other organizations throughout Westchester. According to Carapella, the drive was not very successful in the high school last year. In order to increase the number of donations, class advisors Cindy Zahl, Rita Gianfrancesco, Jon Ambrosio, and Charlene Decker were asked to encourage their students to bring in canned food. Each placed a box outside of their room to collect donations, several of which were decorated under Ambrosios suggestion. To provide an incentive for student donations, high school teachers Shelley Jacobson and Charlene Decker have offered extra credit to students who contribute. The drive has been very successful compared to last year, said Carapella. Its a great deed to do before Christmas, especially because there are so many struggling families during these economic times. The drive began on December 5 and will conclude on December 23.

In elementary school, my favorite time of the school day was recess, said Mango. In the winter we would all go out bundled up in scarves, hats, and gloves. The fact that some children do not have these things is unfair. This cause helps children have a warm memory of their childhood, making friends and staying warm outside. Though it seems small, the big picture of donating hats, gloves, and scarves is something that we should all take part in.The drive began on December 1 and will continue until December 31. Students and faculty members who are interested in donating should gather new or gently used gloves, hats, and scarves and bring them to Mango in school or at 109 Lincoln Avenue.
Invisible Children Book DriveInvisible Children has contributed to the community service efforts this holiday season as well by organizing a high school book drive that lasted from the beginning of November to December 2. Invisible Children is an organization founded in 2003 that seeks to end the conflict in Uganda, Africas longest-running war, and to stop the abduction of children for use as child soldiers in the Lords Resistance Army. The organization raises money to provide relief to the refugee camps created to help children avoid abduction. Through its Schools for Schools branch, the charitys high school chapters raise money to construct and refurbish schools in countries like Uganda, Sudan, and the Republic of Congo, where children are forced to commute from refugee camps. According to Blind Brook chapter co-president Nora Fisher, completed schools include textbook sets, multiple classrooms, computers, school supplies, and a safe-water well.The book drive asked Blind Brook students to collect new and gently used books to be sent to Better World Books, a partner organization. Better World Books sold the collected books and donated the profits to Invisible Children. Although the book drive has ended, Invisible Children will reopen it in later months. Students who are interested in donating can give their new and gently used books to members of the club at any time. When I think that there is a girl my age, living in fear every day of being forced into the LRA or being killed in a 20 year war, I cant even begin to explain what I feel, Fisher stated. These kids are having their childhoods taken away. Even the ones who dont get abducted are forced to live in complete fear and disarray because of the tumult the LRA has caused. Things like this should not be happening anywhere, and anything we can do to help even one little girl or boy get the education they deserve, and have a childhood, is completely worth it.
N & N Toy DriveThis is the third consecutive year for a toy drive run by juniors Jordan Hochberg and Jackie Lavitt. The girls are collecting toys from Rye Brook families to donate to the over 100 children currently at the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Childrens Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at NYU Medical Center. Hochberg was inspired to bring the toy drive to Rye Brook by the efforts of her family friend, Nicole Friedman, who graduated from Riverdale High School. Friedmans brother Corey was diagnosed with leukemia seven years ago. Corey is now fully recovered because of the medical and nursing care he received at the Hassenfeld Childrens Hospital. Friedman and friend Nicole Kaye, a graduate of Rye Country Day High School, began a toy drive in 2004 to help the children at the hospital, calling it the N & N Toy Drive. Hochberg brought the drive to the Rye Brook community, collecting new toys from Rye Brook families that suit the holiday wishes of the children in the hospital.Not only are these kids fighting cancer battles everyday, but their families also have financial difficulties. Giving them these toys and seeing the smiles on their faces give me a great sense of pride in what I am doing, said Hochberg. Lavitt added, I am so happy to be part of a very successful toy drive that makes the children smile and enjoy the holidays!The drive took place from December 7 to December 19. Hochberg and Lavitt worked with fourth grade teachers Michelle Wickman and Tom Pesce to get their elementary school classes involved. For those interested in donating in future years, toys can be dropped off at Hochberg and Lavitts houses. The drive also accepts checks made out to the Friedman Fund for Childhood Leukemia.

Senior Services for Sale!

By Kyle O'NeilDecember 21, 2011December 23 will mark a favorite tradition among the Blind Brook High School seniors: the highly anticipated Senior Service Day. The participating seniors will spend the day with a group of underclassmen or middle school students who purchased their services in the December 13 Senior Auction. The auction was led by senior class officers Carson Jardine, Nora Fisher, Nick Brasesco, Dean Scelfo and Will Whalen. The officers acted as auctioneers, taking bids from students until all the participating seniors were matched to bidders in the crowd. Students were permitted to bid up to $20 each. In order to get as much money as possible, many students got together to bid as a group with their friends. This auction is one of the biggest ways the senior class raises money for their Prom and the senior class gift. Last years class gift, for example, is a flat screen television, mounted on the wall in the Commons. Typically, the senior class raises between two to three thousand dollars at the annual auction. This years auction proved to be successful, with $2,500 raised. I think that everyone really loves the auction. Its become an institution at Blind Brook, said Fisher. Its something I associate with the holiday season; it brings together all the students and teachers on both sides of the building for something thats really a lot of fun.Once students buy a seniors services, the senior spends the day before winter vacation carrying books, taking notes, and ordering lunch for the younger students. In past years, many underclassmen and middle school students asked their senior to order lunch from their favorite restaurants in town. These include Firehouse, Glenville, and even Subway. Younger students look forward to purchasing the services of seniors whom they already know. A number of students even choose to bid on their older siblings.It was so much fun to have a senior, especially my sister. I got to boss her around for once and she had to do what I asked, said sophomore Emily Crandall, who purchased her sisters services in 2009 when Crandall was just in 7th grade.Its a great way to connect with older people, said junior Julia Joseph. It was interesting to see how the seniors and the teachers theyve had before interacted. It made me look forward to being a senior.The entire experience is not only considered enjoyable for the younger students, however, but is also appreciated by the seniors themselves. I think the seniors have just as much fun as the kids buying their services, said Fisher. Weve waited our entire high school careers to do this.

By Blake KaplanDecember 21, 2011New York State recently took action requiring a maximum of a 2% increase in taxes. As a result, the Blind Brook Board of Education is now facing a number of challenges in creating a budget for next school year in order to bridge an anticipated $800,000 gap.Many schools must now cut school budgets to comply with the states requirements. In addition to the tax increase, the state implemented a number of mandates that call for compliance and evaluator training costs for Annual Profession Performance Reviews (APPR). Such expensive mandates leave the school board with few choices. In order to fulfill such mandates, spending must be cut elsewhere. The board now faces a number of difficult choices. Deciding what to cut is not only difficult; it can also be controversial. In a board meeting on October 17, Superintendent William Stark presented a list of ideas for possible cuts. The list included the elimination of a kindergarten through fourth grade science coordinator, a high school guidance counselor, staff from the Writing Center, and the modified sports program in the Middle School. The possible loss of such activities and resources has sparked heated debate among Rye Brook residents and the Board of Education.Some residents are pushing for a second approach. Instead of implementing spending cuts, they are calling for an override of the 2% tax cap. In order for this plan to be adopted, a budget that exceeds the tax cap requires approval of at least 60% of the voters in the community. This may be difficult to achieve, because many voters are strongly opposed to any override. If such a budget were to fail, the board could amend it and put it up for vote a second time. However, if it fails again, a budget with no increase whatsoever would be put into place. Thus, by proposing a budget that asks for an override of the tax cap, the board could be faced with making more dramatic spending cuts than originally proposed. If such an outcome were to result, over one million dollars would have to be cut from the school budget. The Board of Education could draw some money from a savings fund, but it would also have to make some significant spending cuts. Board of Education member Nancy Barr said, At the end of the day, if we do a little bit here and there, were still going to have to make up for a lot of money, so there would be more of a significant cut. At this point, the Board of Education is only brainstorming possible cuts and strategies for developing a budget. Stark will propose his budget plan in February. This will serve as a starting point for the final budget that will later be proposed by the board and put up for vote by the community.

Shaun Derik Shares His Big YOU Message

By Justin CrayDecember 21, 2011Motivational speaker Shaun Derik inspired Blind Brook students with his Little World, Big You message at assemblies for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in late November. Deriks message of believing in oneself and never giving up on dreams resonated well with many of the students, who were happy to see Derik return after a similar assembly last school year. Derik was introduced to the Blind Brook community by juniors Lara Cohen and Tristan Chang and senior Madison Leiberman, who first experienced his public speaking presentations last year at a Westchester County leadership conference. After his first assembly at Blind Brook sparked an overwhelmingly positive response among the student body, students in the Community Coalition club worked to bring Derik back to the high school for this years assembly. The second he started speaking I knew that his presentation was something we all could relate to, said Cohen. His methods of sending his message are definitely attention-grabbing, and thats very important when it comes to expressing something so important to a large group of students.Derik explained to Blind Brook students in both assemblies that he grew up with little to look forward to in his future, until he was inspired by his music teacher to follow his dreams. Now a talented pianist, Derik uses his music as a tool for expressing his messages to students. Derik now speaks across the country and the world through an organization called Youth to Youth International, sharing his story through music, speaking, and humor. In addition to his motivational speaking, Derik created his own album, titled Dreams and Detours, which expresses his message through piano music. Using both his personal experiences and the life stories of others, Derik inspires students to pursue their dreams. Derik focuses on peer pressure and how that can negatively influence ones life. He emphasizes the idea that although peers are sometimes positive, one must never let peers put them down and prevent them from following their dreams. He uses numerous ideas and exercises, ranging from shape-interpretation drawings on a notepad to student dance competitions, to send his message to students. Most students enjoyed the entertaining presentations of this loud and confident guest speaker.Sean Derik always brings energy and personality to the stage. He never fails to put on a good show, said junior Steven Doria, who was featured in one of Deriks student acting exercises on stage. Doria is not alone in his appreciation for Deriks presentation. Most of the students in Blind Brook love Derik, cheering throughout the whole assembly and clapping loudly at the end. The overall impression of Derik throughout the student body was positive. However, some students were not so fond of Deriks assembly. His performance relied too heavily on humor, said junior Shira Levine. And sometimes his message did not get across. A number of students expressed hope that Derrick would return to Blind Brook to share his motivational words next year.Hes a great speaker, said sophomore Matan Neuman. Id definitely be interested in seeing him speak again. His presentation is something enjoyable and meaningful that students can really look forward to.
