2 X 2 Reading List

Newbery Medal
is a reading motivation program for grades 4 and 5 to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading. Books chosen by the A.I.S.D. librarians for inclusion on the reading lists represent quality literature on a variety of topics and levels of difficulty so that the reader will be exposed to a broad range of books. A team of four students from each grade level will be selected in December. All students interested in participating should read all 8 books for his grade level and review them several times before the qualifying test in December. Team members are required to maintain a passing average in all their classes and be free from office referrals. Once selected, team members work together with me several times a week to prepare for the district-wide competition in February. They will be asked to re-read the books, discuss them with me and the other team members, and quiz each other. These books are available in the Butler library as well as the Arlington Public Library.

Definitions
Nonfiction books are those that are not made up but are informational. If they are found in a library, they will have a Dewey Decimal Classification number although NOT ALL BOOKS WITH DEWEY NUMBERS ARE NONFICTION.
Mystery is a fiction genre which centers around a puzzle or unusual problem to solve, such as a crime. Main characters work with clues to try to solve the mystery, without being thrown off by distractions or false leads
Dr. Seuss books were written by Dr. Seuss; this does not include every book with the Cat in the Hat logo
First Step books are a smaller overall size than picture books and are generally around 40 to 60 pages. Examples: Nate the Great books, Mr. Putter and Tabby books, Henry and Mudge books.
History Club: Historical fiction examples: Dear America or OrphanTrain series; Nonfiction - books about various times in history, like WW II; Biography - books about famous people
