OUR MISSION

Midwest Dance Collective was founded on the premise of allowing dancers the opportunity to share the gift of their talent and passion for their art with other performers, artists other than dancers and audiences from diverse backgrounds. The company also focuses on the collaborative productions and outreach programs for charity events and communities that have a need for exposure to the art of dance.

the company is made up of dancers from all over the chicagoland area

dancers ages range from 13-25

rehearsals fall typically on sundays with additional rehearsals as needed

MDC is in residence at Barrington Performing Artz Center

company class is mandatory during season

required tuition is reinvested back into the company experience

our director...

ellen werksman

Dancer, teacher, choreographer and native of Barrington, Ellen Werksman has produced outstanding performances, workshops, scholarship presentations and community events for over 25 years. As the Director of Dancewerks Dance Production Company, she has produced quality dance entertainment for the industrial and commercial industry since 1984. Her expert training in ballet, jazz, modern and tap has awarded her the opportunity to teach across the country for International, National, Regional and Local forums/workshops such as National Association of Dance Masters, The Illinois Dance Festival, Michigan Youth Arts Fest, Dance For Life Dance Workshops and Footloose Dance Competitions in Canada to name a few. She has worked and trained with Robert Joffrey (scholarship recipient), Lou Conte (Hubbard Street Dance Company), Gus Giordano, Rosemary Doolas (Chicago Dance Medium), Nana Shineflug (Chicago Moving Company), American Ballet Theater and Leona Bataille. Ms. Werksman has been recognized in Whos Who Among American Teachers for the past four years for her dedication and outstanding commitment to the art of dance. Her professional career began at the age of 16 when she danced with Illinois Regional Ballet in their production of Nutcracker. Her career continued as a company member with Chicago Dance Medium (8 years), guest artist work with Chicago Repertory Dance Ensemble, featured dancer with Frank Boehms "Jazz Hot", choreography projects with Mary Ward and others. She continues to choreograph for the Chicago dance community, having premiered work at Dance Chicago, Chicagos Next Dance Fest, as well as several youth forums including C.N.A.D.M. (Chicago National Association of Dance Masters) Gala. Ms. Werksman has a long list of performance credits including appearances on Star Search, Oprah Winfrey, and Wild Chicago, was a featured performer with The National Dirty Dancing Tour, worked closely with the films choreographer Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical" producer) and continued to dance with the movie promotions in the Midwest . She choreographed the dancers for Hyatt Regencys promotion on the piano from the movie "BIG", performed with The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Eartha Kitt, James Brown, promotions for Sports Illustrated, McDonald's, United Airlines, The Art Institute of Chicago, and has been featured in Dance Spirit and Dance Teacher Now for her innovative choreography and creative teaching formats. Her musical theater choreographic credits include productions of Camelot, Oklahoma!, Dames At Sea, George M., Guys and Dolls and more. She has also collaborated with Dance for Life, and soloists from the popular So You Think You Can Dance television series. In addition to serving as Artistic director of Midwest Dance Collective, Werksman has assisted in the coordination or production of: The Ela Festival of the Arts-Dance Stage, Chicagos Next Dance Fest, Co-Director for Youthdance Chicago Workshops, Dance Directive Dance Camp and The Summer Intensive Contemporary Dance Workshop. Ms. Werksman founded and directed Applause Talent Presentations Scholarship and Workshop Program for 15 years, and continues to provide Scholarships to young aspiring dancers across the country.
