October Events

Event : J.H. Cohn, LLP – One of the Best Accounting Firms for Women and the 2011 Accounting MOVE Project Executive Report
Location : Hilton Garden Inn, Glastonbury
Speakers : J.H. Cohn LLP’s Lisa Cantone , CPA, an audit partner based in Glastonbury; Carolyn J. D’Anna , CPA, partner, human resources managing director, and co-director of the J.H. Cohn Professional Women'’s Program; and Meg Paradise , manager of the J.H. Cohn Professional Women'’s Program, will speak on the short- and long-term impact of the J.H. Cohn Professional Women'’s Program and its positive contributions to employee morale, development, and retention, as well as Firm reputation. J.H. Cohn is one of the leading accounting and consulting firms in the United States, with offices in Connecticut, New York, California, and throughout New Jersey.
Following its participation in the 2011 Accounting MOVE Project, sponsored by the American Society of Women Accountants (“ASWA”) and the American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants (“AWSCPA”), J.H. Cohn was named among the top ten “Best Accounting Firms for Women” by the organizations. Firms were ranked on such factors as the range, depth, and success of programs and workplace culture proven to remove barriers to women's success, especially at midlevel and above. The MOVE methodology pivots on four factors —money, opportunity, vital supports for work/life, and entrepreneurship—known to advance women in the workplace.
J.H. Cohn stood out for its Professional Women’s Program and work-life programs. With women making up a robust 58 percent of J.H. Cohn managers, the Firm’s female leadership pipeline is rapidly filling and the J.H. Cohn programs introduced since the Program’s 2006 launch—including mentoring programs and leadership conferences—keep women engaged and help prepare them to be tomorrow's business leaders. In addition, J.H. Cohn provides best-in-class tech support for “flex-working” so that alternative career paths are not detours.
ASWA had the privilege of partnering with strategic communication firm Wilson-Taylor Associates, Inc., the American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA), Moss Adams, and Rothstein Kass to produce The 2011 Accounting MOVE Project Executive Report. Based on dozens of interviews, reviews of best practices at 25 firms, and statistical analysis, the report provides new and compelling reasons why career advancement for women of all ages must be actively cultivated in order for accounting firms to stay competitive. The report provides useful recommendations and best practices to recruit, retain, and promote women in accounting. Some of the key findings are:
• Millennials expect women to be business leaders, and view flexwork and fair pay as family economic issues.
• Women are pulling in new clients, even as they accelerate in the partnership pipeline, through innovative business development programs.
• Pay equity must be validated by audits and reviews to validate women's trust in firm leadership.
• Firms that publicly communicate the results of their diversity programs -- not just their activities -- rapidly gain authority with clients, employees and potential recruits.

The Chapter Educational Fund (Fund) is organized to provide scholarships of varying amounts to accounting students who are enrolled in accredited accounting programs in colleges and universities, funds for student activity programs designed to promote careers in accounting, and student memberships in the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants. Ongoing support from ASWA membership through various fundraising efforts has funded these programs in the past.
The Fund has been designated a 501(c) (3) charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service, and is administered by three Trustees who are members of the Chapter. Trustees are appointed by the Chapter President with the approval of the Chapter Board of Directors for a rotating three year term. Activities of the Fund are governed by established Rules and Regulations approved by the Chapter Board of Directors.
To encourage donations to the Educational Fund and to ensure that the Educational Fund can continue awarding scholarships to deserving students, the Trustees are initiating a LIFE MEMBERSHIP program effective July 1, 2006.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP provides contributors to the Educational Fund another opportunity to show their support of the Fund. Life members will be permanently recognized in this section of the website. Members families, friends, co-workers, colleagues, and employers are also encouraged to become life members.
There are two payment options available to become a LIFE MEMBER:
A one-time payment of $400.00; or
Installment payments of $100.00 for 5 years (installments will be billed and payable annually on the pledge anniversary date).
In addition, a SUSTAINING LIFE MEMBER is any Life Member who contributes a minimum of $50.00 in any fiscal year after becoming a Life Member. Anyone contributing to the Educational Fund will be individually recognized by name in the Connecticut Ledger the month following their donation. The Funds tradition of accepting birthday and holiday donations will continue, and the Trustees hope members will maintain these customs. Contributors are encouraged to include the Connecticut Chapter Educational Fund in their estate planning.
