About Us
Our History
On November 15, 1901, a new sorority was organized and named Alpha Sigma Alpha. As stated in the charter, The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among its members, and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mould such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world.Signatures to this document include those of Alpha Sigma Alphas five Founders: Virginia Lee Boyd (Noell), Juliette Jefferson Hundley (Gilliam), Calva Hamlet Watson (Wootton), Louise Burks Cox (Carper), and Mary Williamson Hundley.
Alpha Sigma Alpha is a womens organization that exists to promote high ideals and standards for its members throughout their lives by emphasizing balance among the four aims of intellectual, physical, spiritual and social development. Alpha Sigma Alpha provides structure and guidance through:
SISTERHOOD, which is a strong bond of unconditional friendship based on common values and experiences;
HERITAGE, which is expressed through creed, ritual and history,
OPPORTUNITIES for leadership and involvement in chapter, campus and community

Philanthropy
S. JUNE SMITH CENTER
The mission of the S. June Smith Center is to provide early intervention resources for children with developmental disabilities and their families in homes, schools, and communities. The S. June Smith Center supports children with developmental needs through education, therapeutic services, and family centered programming in Lancaster County, PA.
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
The American Heart Association (AHA) is a non-profit organization in the United States that fosters appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke. It is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."
Every spring, Alpha Sigma Alpha hosts a intermural softball tournament and silent auction to raise money for the A.H.A. Last year, ASA raised over $500 during the tournament.
JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves multiple insulin injections or use a pump every day of their lives.
Every fall semester, Alpha Sigma Alpha teams up with Phi Kappa Psi fraternity in hosting a Jail n' Bail. Students sit in "jail" until they raise enough money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Parents
Are you worried about your daughter joining a sorority? There are no worries with Alpha Sigma Alpha. Maybe you got an excited, shrieking phone call. Maybe it was an oh yeah at the end of an e-mail. Or maybe she hasnt told you yet. However the message was, or will be, delivered your daughter has become a sister of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. So now what do you do?
Dont panic. You've come to the right place. We are a sisterhood designed to bring us together, form bonds and make women of poise and purpose. Below are our national organization policies.
National Policy on Hazing
Alpha Sigma Alpha forbids hazing. Hazing is defined as an activity which endangers the physical safety of a person; produces mental or physical discomfort; causes embarrassment, fright, humiliation, or ridicule; or degrades the individual whether it is intentional or unintentional.
Alpha Sigma Alpha members will not allow themselves or others to be subjected to any treatment which debases the individuals status or robs him or her of dignity. As hazing is both illegal and detrimental, it is the responsibility of each chapter, its members, alumnae and advisors to prevent any form of hazing.
The National Council will investigate any report of hazing. Confirmation of such activity will be followed by disciplinary action such as termination of memberships, chapter probation, and/or the revocation of the chapters charter.
ASA 328, Revised by National Council 6/94, 4/96
National Policy on Human Dignity
Alpha Sigma Alpha prohibits any policy or practice which bars admission on the basis of race, color, creed, religion or national origin. The sorority supports the concept of equality and is committed to building a society where human judgments are based on merit, without regard to gender, race, religious preference or disability.Alpha Sigma Alpha firmly repudiates actions and statements that negate the concepts of self-respect, personal development, equality and dignity.
Alpha Sigma Alpha expects that:
1. Each member will decline to participate in any form of hazing.
2. Each member will decline to participate in activities degrading and demeaning to women, men or persons with disabilities.
3. Each member will decline to participate in degrading or demeaning activities based on religion or race.
4. Each chapter will educate its members about issues facing collegiate women such as substance abuse, sexual harassment, eating disorders, and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
One of our founders, Louise Cox Carper, wrote, The fundamental purpose of a sorority is to cultivate those qualities which will help its members meet more successfully the events of life. A sorority is the training ground for the cultivation of the act of living in harmony with other people.
