Our schematic design mission is to create a net zero home that fuses passive methods of heating and cooling with today' s current active technologies, while conveying a sense of engaged social and living accomodation.

Condensed any unnecessary spaces while still providing a comfortable living arrangement for the occupants.

Each unit is unique in size, shape and layout, giving it its own character.

Matches the street edge properties of the surrounding buildings.

Strategically placed to achieve the maximum southern light

The massing arrangement provides safety for all the users, specially the children and the elderly. The six-people unit only has one floor while the carport is elegantly tucked in under a suspended second floor.

The private and public spaces are divided in order for the public spaces to recieve more passive solar gain.

PUBLIC SPACES

The carport is placed underneath the second floor, and is relatively close to each of the unit entries so that it can easily and safely be accessed by all the users .

The courtyard is the heart of the units allowing for interaction between the families. Additionally, its location allows for privacy from adjacent buildings and safety for the children who will be playing far from the streets. The massing themselves serves as a buffer from the busy street traffic.

The communal space contains an entertainment room and a workstation available for the pleasure and work of the 12 inhabitants. These spaces are complemented by an indoor garden to create a more comfortable and accomodating atmosphere.

Our building is exposed to the four seasons of spring , summer , fall and winter therefore we designed our building in order to adapt to the temperature fluctuations and amount of rain and snow in our climate.

Summer Solstice: 75.1 degrees

Winter Solstice: 28.2 degrees

Spring/Fall Equinox: 51.5 degrees

We designed our building to gain passive and active solar.

This helps building become more net-zero by using natural lighting and heating as well as adequate shading and cooling throughout the year with minimal energy-consuming systems.

Our building program adresses the following practices:

stormwater management through a green roof

use of recycled/sustainable materials such as metal cladding

use of renewable energy resources such as geothermal and solar
