Our mission is "to organize and unite for educational professional development purposes, the students of architecture and its allied arts in the universities and colleges of America, and the alumni members of this fraternity, in order that this fraternity may promote the artistic, scientific, and practical proficiency of its membership and the profession."
Alpha Rho Chi was established to encourage closer fellowship and a greater interest in the study of Architecture and the Allied Arts. Alpha Rho Chi (APX) prepares its members to live up to the demands and expectations of the business world. Members learn to live and work with other people and to share experiences and ideas. By practicing tolerance, consideration and mutual respect, they observe and develop principals of leadership, service, communication and human relations.
The Domitian Chapter of Alpha Rho Chi is situated in the city of Newark, New Jersey. Our foundation lies within the College of Architecture + Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and within our Alumni Association. Over the years, our chapter has been working on building a strong network of brothers around the tri-state metropolitan area and we've taken strides to reach out to the New Jersey College of Artchitecture + Design as a positive force of intellectually involved students.
The Domitian Chapter prides themselves in having continuous, close-knit pledge classes that continue to foster brotherhood and fellowship, allowing the chapter to grow in our ability to give back to our school, the City of Newark, and the architectural community.
Fidelitas, Amor et Artes
Domitian Brothers Michael Marvin and Gregory Moorman were first introduced to Alpha Rho Chi in 2002. As freshman, they had spent a year looking for fun, social camaraderie, including fraternal opportunities, on campus. Dissatisfied with the solely social environment of the fraternities they had access to, they considered forming their own one that they could identify with specifically.
Upon searching for an architecture fraternity, they came across the website of the Daedalus Chapter of Alpha Rho Chi, from Southern California. They eventually landed upon the national website and from there gained insight into what they discovered is the only national, co-ed professional-social fraternity for architecture and the allied arts. From there, it took several conversations with the then Expansion Director, Brother Frank Kitchel, and it would be another two years before this group of determined individuals submitted their Colony application in the Spring of 2004. The Domitian Colony was voted into existence at the APX National Convention in 2004.
The first new Apprentices of the Domitian Colony (our Alpha Class) were sponsored by the Vitruvius Chapter and were pinned in on September 5th, 2004. The following weekend, Pledge Master AJ Kessinger came to visit the Domitian Colony in order to help the new Apprentices begin the process of finding additional apprentices to achieve the ten-person minimum that was required to become an official chapter. They quickly pinned in a Beta Class, and with the inclusion of Professor Thomas Navin, would go on to become the founding Brothers of the Domitian Chapter. The Alpha-Beta Class of Domitian crossed into Brotherhood on Friday, December 4th 2004. An especially proud day for the Chapter was receiving the Domitian Charter at the APX National Convention in 2005.
Our existence since that fateful year has been a whirlwind experience. While our Charter Brothers worked very hard to have the Domitian Chapter installed, each of the following pledge classes has had a significant role in shaping our Chapter.

:RELAY FOR LIFE
The Domitians of Alpha Rho Chi particpate in a Relay For Life charity event created by The American Cancer Society and organized/hosted by the University Heights community at NJIT. The event lasts a full twelve hours from dusk till dawn and brothers walk alongside cancer survivors and other supporters. In the Spring of 2011, brothers set a goal to raise $500 for the American Cancer Society and ultimately raised TRIPLE that amount, at a total of $1,605.00!
:AIDS WALK NYC
Domitian brothers join at the end of Spring semester to partake in the New York City AIDS Walk. Brothers register, donate, and join in the awareness walk through Central Park and the streets of New York City alongside many other teams, fraternities, sororities, and organizations.
:FIRST-YEAR HANDBOOK
The Domitians are currently working on a handbook to distribute to incoming first-year Architecture + Design students with helpful tips, guides, and how-to's for the everyday studio student. This handbook will inform new students on the basics and strengths of popular design computer software as well as addresses and phone numbers to nearby restaraunts and cafes that are open-late. The friendly handbook will also contain contact information to the other organizations at the CoAD such as AIAS, NOMAS, and USGBC as well as schedules to the AIAS Printroom and the school's Modelshop. This handbook will be made available online at a website much similar to this which is currently under construction.
:MLK ENTRANCE BICYCLE RACK COMPETITION
Alpha Rho Chi Domitian is currently working towards creating a Bicycle Rack Competition that will be open to all the students at CoAD and will be constructed and funded by APX on the 1st floor entrance of Weston (the backdoor entrance at MLK Boulevard). Currently there is little to no signage to the College of Architecture + Design at the MLK entrance. Typically there are student- and faculty-owned bicycles tied and locked to the railings of the main stair. The Domitians want to create this competition so that the winning student design will be constructed and donated to the CoAD back entrance. It will include signage to the CoAD, an interesting design twist to the average bike rack, and it will also promote a green form of transportation. Coming soon!
:JERRY'S DISCOUNTED ART SUPPLY PACKAGES
Every summer the Domitian Brothers of Alpha Rho Chi team up with the representatives and managers at Jerry's Artist Outlet in West Orange, NJ as well as with the administration at the College of Architecture + Design to organize discounted supply packages for incoming first-year students. Coordinators from the Architecture and Design programs create supply lists based on their yearly curriculum. These lists are given to the the managers at Jerry's so that they can contact their suppliers for the best prices they can find, which happen to be the lowest prices in the Tri-state Metropolitan area. These packages are then offered to incoming first year students, created, and sold. They are then distributed via mail or via APX at the first week of school. These discounted packages cater to student's major and save them a lot of money and hassle shopping.
:LATE-NIGHT STUDIO COFFEE + BAKE SALES
Hungry and up-late working on Studio, Architecture History, or Building Systems assignments? No need to travel far. The brother's of APX organize late-night bake sales, hosted typically from the hours of 10PM-2AM every night before Studio. We are located on the third floor entrance into Weston. We also make studio-runs with our snacks, drinks, and coffee so that students don't need to leave their seat and take a break from their work.
:TRIP TO MoMA
Each semester the Domitians host a trip to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in the City of New York. This trip is typically held in the first month of each semester as a Rush event open to students at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The trip is entirely paid for by the brothers of Alpha Rho Chi. Interested students meet at the Weston Loft at a time determined by the brothers, and commute together to the museum via the Newark Light Rail, the PATH Train, and the NYC Subway. The trip is fun and the exhibits change every semester.
:DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT
A dodgeball tournament is typically hosted each semester by the Brothers of Alpha Rho Chi in the Weston Gallery. All students are welcome to enter and join. Sign-up to join can be done via e-mail or on the spot. Join the brothers and the CoAD community at a friendly game of dodgeball to release studio stress. Prizes from Jerry's Artist Outlet are distributed to the First, Second, and Third place winners!
:WHITE ROSE SPRING FORMAL
Every Spring semester the Domitian Brothers of Alpha Rho Chi have a formal called White Rose; named after the fraternity flower. This formal is private only to Brothers and Apprentices. White Rose has been located at several venues (Adega's Lounge, Bloomfield Steak &Seafood Restaraunt) around the NJIT neighborhood. It is where active brothers from past and present come together to eat, drink, dance, and have a great time.
:THANKSGIVING DINNER
Every Fall around Thanksgiving, the Domitian Alumni Association of Alpha Rho Chi organizes a Thanksgiving dinner. These dinners are located at Alumni brother's apartment and are a time for the brothers to come together and feast over a Thanksgiving meal.
:NATIONAL ALPHA RHO CHI CONVENTION
Every Spring, Alpha Rho Chi hosts its annual National Convention. Convention has been held in cities such as Reno, Minneapolis, Memphis, Richmond, New Orleans, and many others. At Convention, brothers from chapters and regions from all around the nation come together to celebrate another year of Alpha Rho Chi. At Convention, delegates from every chapter meet daily to discuss and vote on pressing fraternal matters. Convention also hosts a guest lecture and a series of professional and fraternal workshops for members and affiliates of APX. Convention comes to a close with a grand formal commemoration where all the brothers and affiliates from past and present get to feast, dance, and celebrate.
:NATIONAL ALPHA RHO CHI LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Every year in the Fall, Alpha Rho Chi hosts an annual Leadership Conference. At Leadership Conference, brothers from chapters all around the nation come together for a guest lecture and a series of professional and fraternal workshops. The Domitian Chapter of Alpha Rho Chi proudly hosted the 2009 National Leadership Conference in the City of Newark, New Jersey where Brother Robert Ivy, Editor-in-Chief of Architectural Record and one of the Master Architects of APX, served as the keynote speaker.
