SPRING 2012
It's that time of year again... APhiG welcomes everyone Back to School! The Sisters have an exciting semester ahead with a lot of great events so you'll definitely want to stay tuned for updates on our Facebook page! RUSH for the spring semester will begin this February.
Purpose
To bring together all women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and sisterhood. Alpha Phi Gamma exists to provide service and Asian Awareness to the University and the surrounding communities for the betterment of society. It promotes Scholarship and academic excellence, personal development and leadership.
History
Alpha Phi Gamma is the first Asian American Interest Sorority established at California State Polytechnic University on February 1, 1994. The Seven Founders, Allex Choi, Candy Cunanan, Christine Nguyen, Sandie Rillera, Kolleen Kim, Grace Hsieh, and Jennifer Oku wanted to bring together all women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and sisterhood. During the summer of 1998, Six Sisters wanted to follow in their footsteps and establish this foundation at Northern Illinois University. These Sisters wanted to make a difference in the University and the surrounding community.
During the summer of 1998, Six Sisters wanted to follow in their footsteps and establish this foundation at Northern Illinois University. These Sisters wanted to make a difference in the University and the surrounding community. On August 29, 1998, Alpha Phi Gamma was colonized at Northern Illinois University. The Six Sisters who started the N.I.U. Beta Chapter are Helaine Hiso, Lani Aquino, Rowena Carmona, Roniciel Joy Molano, Michelle L. Liwanag, and Jaymee Romasanta.
These Sisters opened connections to the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Gamma in Pomona, California, and even flew to Cal Poly Pomona for the weekend of initiation. They worked hard and remained committed to each other and to the sorority for the entire summer, and continue to strive to achieve the goals of Alpha Phi Gamma. The sorority was established to promote service and Asian Awareness to the University and to the community. Alpha Phi Gamma's basis is its pride in being open to new ideas and the understanding of the lifestyle of an Asian American Woman.
Alpha Phi Gamma's official national philanthropy is the Fight Against Domestic Violence Towards Women. The origins of our National Philanthropy began at our First National Conference in June 1999. Our Sisters voted to focus on a cause that was not as strongly supported as others, but affected the lives of many women around the world. Thus began our passion in helping to fight against violence towards women.
Since then, our Sisters across the nation have committed their efforts in volunteering with shelters and organizations, and to help raise funds for this cause. We seek to spread awareness of this cause to build support in our communities year-round. In addition, during Domestic Violence Awareness month in October, Alpha Phi Gamma joins together on a national level to volunteer time, raise awareness and help fundraise for this important cause.
In November 2009, Alpha Phi Gamma strengthened their committment by becoming a member of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). The NCADV, whose core funding is generated through membership dues and product sales, is a non-profit grassroots membership organization working to:
* Eliminate Domestic Violence
* Empower Victims of Domestic Violence
* Unite Our Voices
* Alert and Educate the Public
* Build Partnerships
Join Alpha Phi Gamma and the NCADV to stop domestic violence and make Every Home a Safe Home!
Aside from our national philanthropy, Alpha Phi Gamma focuses on other activities that give back to our community. In doing so, not only do we better the lives of our Sisters, but it helps to create a bond with the community and people that made us who we are.
Other philanthropy activities the ladies of Alpha Phi Gamma associate with include:
* Revlon Run/Walk
* NIU Cares Day
* March of Dimes
* Komen Race for the Cure
* Working with Children at Safe Passage
* American Cancer Society- Relay for Life
* Volunteering at Hope Haven, food pantries, and many more!
As an Asian Interest Organization, another goal of ours is to promote Asian cultures through our Annual Asian Awareness Week every April. We hope that these events allow an opportunity for the NIU community and campus learn more about the Asian culture. Our previous events have been published in the Northern Star Newspaper, PAISA Magazine, and as a sorority were awarded a Student Leadership Award from the Student Involvement and Leadership Development Office in 2003. We were also recognized as an active and visible organization at NIU at Taste of Asia 2004 hosted by the Asian American Resource Center on campus. Our events emphasize culture through: dance, music, historical events, leadership programs, movies panel discussions, and a collaborated Cultural Night with presentations, food, skits, a fashion show, and opportunities for other organizations to participate or contribute as well.
What is Rush?
Rush Week, also known as Recruitment week, occurs at the beginning of each semester. It is an opportunity for students learn more about Greek Life without any commitment. During this time, students can ask questions and decide if it's right for them. This also gives students a chance to meet members from different Greek organizations, including Alpha Phi Gamma. Students and members hang out and get to know each other through various events. Some events held by Alpha Phi Gamma during Rush include Informationals, Philanthropies, Sisterhoods and Socials.
How much does it cost?
All events are free and rides can be provided!
Do I have to be Asian-American to join?
Absoultuely not! Alpha Phi Gamma is an Asian-interest sorority but we are not Asian-exclusive. Our organization takes pride in its diversity and we will not discriminate in terms of race, color, age, sexual orientation, national origin, physical or mental ability, marital status, financial or social status.
How do I become considered?
Women interested in Alpha Phi Gamma must attend:
1. One informational night
2. Girls Night In
3. Any other event of your choosing
In the event that you miss Rush Week for any reason you may also contact us at anytime if you are interested in learning more and becoming part of our interest program! Please feel fill out a form on our contact page!
