A single phone call and a group renting space at the Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center changed the world for the sisters at Our Lady of Grace. In just a few weeks the sisters went from the beautiful monastery in Beech Grove to the women with two of the hottest tickets in town and the home to the company running the hottest attraction at the Super Bowl.
About a year ago, the administration at the Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center approached a friend who was part of the Super Bowl Planning Committee. They discussed the possibility of renting the facilities to those attending the Super Bowl. The committee was quite helpful and before they knew it the Inn was beginning to fill up. Fortunately, the groups renting were vendors at the Super Bowl - the most popular....the company who ran the Zip Line that spanned Georgia Street in downtown Indianapolis, People waited in line up to six hours to take a 20 second zip down the line. It was by far the most popular attraction at the Super Bowl, besides the game, of course. Wonderful men and women came to the Benedict Inn for several weeks and received a double dose of hospitality - Benedictine hospitality and good ol' Hoosier hospitality. It was a win-win situation for both the sisters and their guests.
Then, just two weeks shy of the Super Bowl, the sisters received a call from a good friend and Beech Grove jewelry store owner, Frank Mascari. Hoping that his beloved Green Bay Packers would be in the Super Bowl he purchased tickets several weeks prior to the scheduled date of the big game. To his dismay things just did not work out as he had planned and the desire to attend the Super Bowl soon waned and he decided to give the tickets to the sister to raffle off to benefit the Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center. Thrilled by his kindness, the sisters then had to put their heads together to figure out a plan. There was not enough time to have a raffle so it was decided to have an online auction. Not wanting to go the e-bay route, the sisters put together their own online auction on their website. An undertaking foreign to them but one they were willing to pursue. Thanks to local television and print coverage the news was out that the sisters had a great package deal for the Super Bowl. Soon news wasn't isolated to just the Indianapolis area but all over the country! Surprisingly it was a huge success and after all was said and done they were able to raise $8,012.33 for the Benedict Inn. It was won by a young man from Canada who had purchased it for his younger brother who is a huge New York Giants fan, for his birthday.
During this entire process - from the meeting with the Super Bowl Committee to the tremendous donation, the sisters not only were able to generate needed funds for the Benedict Inn, but probablay more importantly, they made many new friends.
