Tea time
One warm spring afternoon, Tea time, Aniek Meelijks playful tea set, was born. On the garden table she sees more than her own tea set. She discovered that its shadows could not be separated from the shapes of the set and that they constantly played their own game with them. The objects that surround us ask not only to be used, but also to be seen and experienced. This takes time. Tea time.

Branches vase
A vase usually hides the stems of the flowers. In this case the total shape of the vase is determined by the branches of the flowers. The vase shows that the lower part of the flower can be just as beautiful and interesting as the upper side.

Tutti Frutti
The fruit bowl Tutti Frutti is made out of 12- 20 different kinds of fruits nets. The shape of the bowl is, just like the fruit nets, determined by the contents of it. Because of the different colors of the nets, the nets overlaps, no piece of the bowl is the same. Every little piece has a color combination and structure of its own.

Laced-up vases
Jingdezhen (CN) 2009/2010
There seems to be tension on the material, like the flexibility of a balloon. I was really fascinated by a shape that's laced up with a rope. These nice curves I cannot model with my own hands.
The shapes are even better if they hang.
Bottle objects
Ghent (BE) 2010
I walked along the beach from Portugal and was pretty shocked how polluted the sea was.
But I was also inspired by the enormous plastic colored bottles and handles along the beach. I was curious what form the plastic handle or bottle cap would have been. So I invented my own form attached to the handle. This resulted to a various bottle objects from different colors and shapes.
Dip & Dye vases
Vases have always inspired and fascinated me. A vase is a functional object and at the same time a sculpture.
Because I work with archetypal forms, the forms remain recognizable during the ceramic process. The rules are thus largely determined by me, but the results remain unpredictable by the properties of the material itself. During my working process I constantly seek for a change or deformity, which I "have no control over." Factors such as the firing process, the glaze or the structure of the clay, each provide a new and surprising result.
Boundaries of perfection and imperfection seem to fade and blend into each other.

Loam vase
Seeking perfection?
It took a lot of time to create this vase. I dug the clay itself, therefore I went to a stone quarry. I made the prototype on the plasterwheel in the EKWC.
When I had the prototype I had to make a mold.
I wanted to create a perfect vase. But the question is when will I be satisfied? Will it be more interesting if it turn into something new, unexpected. Can we create perfection?
In the film I made you will see how this vase will perish. After all that work...
the vase turned into dust.

Aniek Meeldijk graduated at the Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) Rotterdam in 2009 with her shadow tea set Tea time, a beautiful example of Dutch Design. For this design she received an award of the city of Rotterdam. Shortly after graduating she went to Jingdezhen with the WdKA, the porcelain city of China. In June 2011 she graduated at the Master Visual Arts (Ceramics and Glass Art Department) in Ghent, Belgium.
Since 2009 Aniek shares a design studio together with Niek de Snoo. He graduated at the Design Academy Eindhoven in June 2011. They work individually but, often collaborate in projects. They focus on product design and sculpture. Their experiences of studying design and art in Belgium and the Netherlands give a unique affection to concrete their philosophy and aesthetic.

A project of the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam- October 2009
'Gesamtkunstwerk' - coordinated by Adriaan Rees and Maik Mager.
Students were given the task to design independent ceramic objects, which eventually will become part of one big 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. This object can, depending on the area and function, have different forms.
The ceramics group (Vincent Bos, Emma van Eijkeren, Foekje Fleur van Duin, Florian Borstlap, Borre van der Hoeven, Dorian Blanke en Aniek Meeldijk) left for Jingdezhen on October 21 .
Jingdezhen is a big city with a porcelain district (Sculpture Factory). Actually, it is a big factory site which consists of about 150 studios: open at 08.30 closed at 18.00 hrs.
Artists from China and elsewhere have found their way to this area and have hired small spots. There are cooperations who invite artists to come and work here. The number of Chinese specialists in the Sculpture Factory is enormous.
After a discussion about all the proposals made in Shanghai, the students got back to work on the second day in Jingdezhen.
The students are divided in two groups working in two separate studios under guidance of a Chinese specialist.
During the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, two of these works were shown as a 'Gesamtkunstwerk' to the public in the Dutch Culture Centre in Shanghai. And a bit later (may 2010) a coloured version of the ceramic gesamtkunstwerk is shown at the Student Biennale Shanghai (CN).

In February 2010 my friend Graça Brohm and I went to the ceramic factory, Royal Delft Pottery. We saw a beautiful Delftblue tearbottle . With an even greater meaning:
It is said, that the little bottle owes its name and form to those far away days when sailormen were very often absent for a very long period of time and when saying goodbye, the women left behind wept bitterly. Due to the lack of photography or any other means of communication, it is explicable that people still wanted a souvenir from home and thus the little tearbottle was created. The bottleneck was placed in the corner of the eye and in this way the tears could be captured. A precious little token was carried on far away voyages. If someone should be moved to tears, in this way one can express that person a real proof of ones sympathy.
Illustrator Graça was inspired by this beautiful story and made two designs as decoration for the tearbottle. Aniek then made a silkcreen of the drawings to print the glaze on a transfer. After that she created serveral forms on the potters wheel, as prototypes. We do have to decide which one we like best for the final mould. At the picture you see the first prototype.

Aniek Meeldijk and Emma Hazenak combined their qualities. They met each other in 2002 at the Art Academy St. Joost in Breda in the Netherlands. Emma has been making 'chalk' animations since 2009, and operates as a freelance animator and illustrator. Aniek has been working with ceramics since 2005.
The cooperation between Aniek and Emma is a fusion of ceramics, decoration and animation. The project consists of ceramic bowls and an animation film. The film tells a story about the decoration of the bowls.
