I call myself Angie (short for Angelia - Most people get confused about the way it pronounced so I adopted Aussie way of abbreviation).
I am a general member of AMT (Association of Massage Therapists Ltd.) currently holding Certificate IV of Massage Therapies. A lot of people may stop here thinking I couldn't be good with only a Cert IV. But you never know your luck. To my own experience, finding a good therpist is just a lucky dip. You can empty your wallet to get the most crapy massage with a therapist who has the most desired degree or you could just spending $20 - $30 on an 1 hour really awesome massage at some student clinic of a massage school. Why is that? To me, it all comes to three things:
One is the Gift - the healing abilities, tactile skills (sensitivities of touch) and the heart (does the therapist love his/her job? It makes such a difference - there are bonds and energy exchanges between a therapist and the client. Without the bond, healing energy is hard to cross over.)
Two is Experience - Clinical experiences help therapists quickly identify problems and also strengthen their tactile skills. The more bodywork you do, the more sensitive you become of identifying problems.
I would put education on No.3 - Nevertherless it is important. A theparist gets confidence from the knowledge he/she has. e.g. What are the contraindications to massage and where are the safe areas that we can put pressure on a client's body? How to explain the problems and educate the clients to helpt themselves in regarding to improving their conditions etc.
Regardless what I just said. You need to find a therapist who suits you the most. Everyone responds differently to different therapists. So bonding is important. Once you find a good therapist, stick with him/her. Because the more he/she knows you the better the result it will comes....Good luck with it...
