Joel Lindsey, a Pittsburgh musician from London, England, has a style of songwriting so heartfelt and true that his melodies are turning heads from Pennsylvania to Piccadilly Circus.
His voice is ferocious yet tearfully sweet. When the first note from this gifted singer rings from the stage, the pure emotion and dedication of a lifetime of songwriting ensnares the audience's attention.
The son of an East London professional guitarist and an ex-flower power hipster from the East Village of New York, Joel has been surrounded by the rock and roll life from an early age. As a child, his playground was the family-owned music store, where he first discovered the guitar and piano. By the age of 14, Joel was fronting the band Easy in front of sold-out London venues such as The Jazz Café, The Garage and The Borderline.
Joel took some time off from music during college to pursue acting and visual art. He found himself recruited by the Royal National Youth Theatre, leading to perform under the direction of Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) and Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd). Through their influence, he rediscovered his passion for songwriting.
After graduation, Joel expanded his sound to form The Joel Lindsey Band, writing and performing on acoustic guitar and piano, with a uniquely crossbred sound of American soul and British rock. Influenced by Stevie Wonder, Free, Paul Simon, and the Beatles, his melodies and memorable hooks began to gain the support of an increasing fan base and the respect of the music industry.
In search of new inspiration, Joel left London in March 2007 for what would be a life-changing journey a solo tour across the States to discover his familys roots. Initially based in Pittsburgh, he travelled for three months from coast to coast, starting in D.C and ending in San Francisco. Joel and his Breedlove guitar performed at songwriter showcases and opened for various established bands, creating a nationwide fan base along the way.
Since his return, Joel is a regular fixture at the top acoustic venues in Pittsburgh and the surrounding region, and is featured regularly in the local media. At a British Invasion concert held by historic promoter Pete Bennett (named the World's #1 Promotion Man by Billboard Magazine), Joel shared the stage with British legend Denny Laine (Wings, Moody Blues). Joel also cultivated an Italian fan base through an electrifying opening performance opening for Italian superstar, Elisa.
In addition to his own performances, Joel encourages other local talent through his organization Best in the 'Burgh a high-profile monthly showcase event featuring the best singer-songwriters in the city.
His current band, The Boulevard of the Allies, is an all-star five piece folk-rock band who is causing a huge stir amongst the local press and public. In May 2010 the band released their debut album 'Man in the Phtograph and have since sold over 1000 copies. The songs depict Joel's thoughts on his journey from London to America, and all of the things he has discovered and left behind.

Stand-out Artists and What We Can Learn From Them
Joel Lindsey is proof that you can make it as a full-time artist in your city, if youre good at what you do. The British-born Pittsburgh artist has only been living in the United States just shy of 18 months and already he has networked his way to playing most of the major and minor venues in the city, established a non-profit that raises money for charities through a monthly artist showcase called Best in the Burgh, and hosts a weekly Open Mic Night at Pittsburgh favorite lounge, Club Cafe. I think my favorite thing about Joel is that he is extremely hard working willing to do whatever it takes to be accomplished.

Joel is a man of music. However, music is not the only thing that makes him a man. He has goals, ambitions, ideals and values that go beyond that. Although London and Pittsburgh are almost night and day, he has remained true to his principles. Keeping music at the core of his motivation, he strives to be the best he can be. For now, take the time to read between the lines and stay abreast for elevation of musical prowess in the near future.

...Lindsey's pitch and range were remarkable; convincing me hes got one of the regions best voices. Even with tongue in cheek, he kept up with the vocal acrobatics of Christina Aguilera during his cover of Genie in a Bottle.
Lindsey proved to be a gifted guitarist, too, with a batch of catchy originals that give credence to his Web sites lofty title theReturnOfTheMelody.com. By the end of his 40-minute set, Lindsey had Coffee Buzz customers digging into their wallets to buy his self-made CD.

Joel played here back in March and immediately became one of our favorite acts to ever play Aldo Coffee. Joel's music is upbeat and his performances are engaging. He's a happy dude for someone who moved from London to Pittsburgh ;-)
Remember these words: "My name's James. James the Cat. Chasing the birds and the butterflies. Yo. James the Cat." And sing along when Joel gets there.
