Lake Design and Management Services A Guide to Fee and Scope of Services.
Lake design and management is a specialise field in which its application has an impact on the environment. In Malaysia this professional service is not regulated by the authority but there are obligation on the part of the owner on the effect of the lake to its surrounding environment like landscaping, drainage system, water retention and flood controls.
For 1 hectare and below of water bodies for design and management, the fee and services break down are as follows:
Professional appointment for lake design and management consultation.
a. A minimum fee of RM 250,000 or 7 % of the construction costs, whichever is higher.
b. The scope of services for this appointment include technical consultation in areas directly related to lake design, construction and management as follows:
i. Lake design for the purpose to contain a body of freshwater.
ii. Lake design for the water body to survive ecologically towards transforming it into a natural entity over time.
iii. Lake design to incorporate essential components (like a bio-filtration & circulatory system) for the purpose to maintain the health of its water quality.
iv. Lake design to allow biological communities to thrive and survive like the stocking of functional fishes and aquatic macrophytes (plants).
v. Advice on the types and quantity of fishes and aquatic macrophytes for the lake for beneficial purposes.
vi. Advice on water quality monitoring and management.
Provisions:
i. To provide technical comments on the feasibility of the lake design in the master plan.
ii. To provide technical information on the morphology of the lake like depth profile.
iii. To provide other technical information for the engineers and architects to compile where necessary for DO submission.
iv. To provide a general estimated budget for the lake design and implementation.
The purpose of the bio-filtration system in fish ponds is to achieve clean clear water with minimal maintenance by means of dissolved nutrients content control. This system does not involves any chemical at all and therefore, it entirely depends on all natural aspects to keep its balance. Sunlight, weather, water temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, fish quantity and more...affects and influence the system.
Naturally, the algae mat on pond bottom and layered on walls are natural formation. These are beneficial to the ponds as algae absorbs excess nutrients and releases oxygen through photosynthesis, thus keeping the water quality in good health. Excessive algae formation is due to excessive nutrients in water particularly from over stocking of fishes and over feeding. Given time, such excessive nutrients will be decomposed through the process of nitrogen cycle.
The bio-filtration system is a part of the nitrogen cycle, introduced artificially, whereby it helps in the processess of oxidation . Good and efficient design increase the rate of the oxidation process that evetually allows the water to appear clean and crisp clear.
Though, the formation of algae in ponds is part of the plan but they are not to dominate and the water is to remain clean and clear.
If you expect the pond to be all clean and clear at all times without even algae to exist on walls or pond bottom, you should consider applying chemicals like chlorine that kill all as in swimming pool or having none at all......

The company, Ayer Matahari Konsep evolved over time to suit our services and our age. Long ago in the mid-80s, we started off as Nekton Enterprise , a small company running a fish hatchery applying the bio-filtration system. In the mid-90s, we explored into designing pond and the bio-filtration system for the building industry, then we were called Lakescape Integration . With Clement Chan as the architect of the company, we designed and applied the bio-filtration system in Lagenda Langkawi.
In the late 90s, I decided to venture into Thailand after inspired by the work of Lek Bunnag and Bill Bensley. With some encouragment from Khun Chaiyawan, Thailand became our design and work playground until Thaksin Shinawatra went into exile in 2006.
In the early 2000, I met Yokasara. I started to explore Bali in the end of 2001. With Karl Princic at Made's Warong on my 42nd birthday and still very encourage by him to these days.
Ayer Matahari Sdn Bhd was registered in the mid 2004 to take on local and regional water features design and management projects. In 2011, Ayer Matahari Sdn Bhd business objectives were re-written to focus on lake construction and installation projects.
To meet all other market demands and to suit my retirement plan, Ayer Matahari Konsep and NSM Bio Filter System were formed to provide design and consultancy services as well as to the implementation of the bio-filtration system respectively.
