Tango is much more than music and dance. Together with related disciplines such as poetry, song and the fine arts, Tango is ultimately a way to see and approach the world. Despite the fact that the essence of this cultural phenomenon finds home in the two main cities of the mouth of the Plate River, Tango transcends country borders being a true global phenomenon. Aware of its cultural uniqueness, importance, and pervasiveness in 2009 UNESCO inscribed Tango on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Tango belongs to all humanity! And there is something about Tango that can relate to anyone, anywhere!
After years of playing, composing, arranging, teaching and coaching, I came to realize that it is not the notes, nor the steps, that are the most wonderful, transformative, enticing, moving, inspiring, and powerful aspects of Tango. They are too, of course! But much more critical are the myriad meanings and ways to sense and feel, hidden behind such notes and steps. The transcendence that one can reach, the vulnerability that befalls, the sense of creativity, the togetherness that it incites, the sensual experience, the intensity and the chance for catharsis are all part of the whole experience and magic of Tango. What some excellent musicians, dancers and singers lack is precisely the understanding and experiencing of this complex, unique, and fascinating universe that lies right beneath the surface of the disciplines they practice. As a musician and social scientist, that is what I teach. And what will make the whole difference for you!
