Dear Donors and Friends,
It is with a great sense of loss that we are writing to you. On December 25th, 2010, at 5am (Austrian Time), Alma Hadzic lost her fight for life due to complications following her heart transplant at AKH Hospital in Vienna. Alma was doing well immediately after her surgery, but on December 17th, 2010, Alma had an aneurism on the left side of her forehead. A team of doctors at the AKH Hospital immediately intervened and surgically stopped her bleeding. Her body temperature was lowered and Alma was in an induced comma to allow for the brains swallowing to subside. Alma's condition was relatively stable for several days, and doctors at AKH Hospital have employed all their expertise to aid Alma in her fight for survival. Despite Almas unparalleled desire to live and despite excellent medical care she had received at AKH Hospital, Alma lost her last fight.
We are incredibly saddened by Alma's untimely death. Her smile, courage, and determination throughout the last 12 months have been and will remain an inspiration to many of us. She will be missed not only by her family, but by all of us who have gotten to know her throughout her difficult journey.
We would like to use this opportunity to once again thank all of you for your support of Alma and her family. Knowing that Alma was helped by so many generous people will help Alma's family cope with their profound loss.
Sincerely,
Alma Hadzic Transplant Fund

Dear Donors and Friends of Alma Hadzic,
In recent weeks, many of you have asked about Alma Hadzic and her current condition, so we wanted to update you on the most recent developments. Over the last several months, Alma's friends and family have worked together, both here in the US and in Europe, on raising funds for Alma's heart transplant. Together with the help of many Academy members, we were successful in raising sufficient funds for Alma's placement on the heart transplant list at AKH hospital in Vienna. Alma's father also secured Bosnian government's guarantee that the remainder of the funds would be provided as well.
Unfortunately, Alma has not received her new heart yet, and her condition is worsening. As per the most recent communication we received from Alma's father, her failing heart is affecting other organs, resulting in kidney dysfunction and water retention problems. Alma is scheduled for re-evaluation by Dr. Gregor Wollenek at AKH (Department for Cardiac Surgery), on October 17, 2010. She is currently in Bihac and surrounded by her family and friends. Alma continues to impress everyone with her undeniable desire to survive, and we sincerely hope she will get her turn on the organ waiting list very soon.
We would like to use this opportunity to once again thank all of you for lending your expertise to help Alma and her family, as well as those of you who helped financially and made Alma's transplant possible. We would also like to thank our colleagues from the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Academy of Arts and Sciences who have helped Alma and her family in more ways than one. We also greatly appreciate the efforts of Edin Gali (a Bosnian-born actor from Mad Men) who helped publicize Alma's story through his fundraising efforts. Without a collective effort of all of you, Alma's heart transplant would not have been possible.
Lastly, if you would like any additional information on Alma's current condition and/or our activities over the last few months, please feel free to contact us at any time. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
What will happen with my donation if Alma passes away before we collect enough money for her heart transplant?
If only 5,000 of us donate each 50 dollars, we can collect 250,000 dollars! With your help, we can do it in time! However, if Alma were to pass away prior to us collecting the necessary funds and you would like to have your donation, please send us a written request through the Contact Form stating that you wish your donation to be returned. Please provide us with specific contact information where we can return your donation. If we do not receive your written request, we would donate the collected funds to one or more children charities and pediatric hospitals that work on saving childrens lives! In this case, detailed information on where and in which amounts donations were made would be disclosed on our website. At this time, we are focused and working 24-7 to collect sufficient funds for Alma, and we believe we can do it with your help!
I can donate only a small amount of money. Will it make a difference?
5,000 x 50 dollars = 250,000 dollars = CHILDs LIFE!!!!! So, please donate whatever you can as YOUR donation is crucial to our success.
Are you a non-governmental organization? If not, why not?
It takes weeks and potentially months to set up a non-profit entity in the United States. Given that Alma has only several months to live, we had no time to set up a non-profit organization.
Who are the individuals behind the Alma Hadzic Transplant Fund initiative?
The people who started this initiative are Amer Fejzic and Amra Sabic-El-Rayess, but this is now YOUR initiative as your participation is essential for our success. Here, we also would like to thank the Bosnian-Herzegovinian and American Academy of Art and Science whose members have provided their support and advice to us and to the Hadzic family.
We also thank the Sanela Diana Jenkins Foundation for its first and largest donation for Almas heart transplant, as well as the exceptional commitment and support of the following individuals: Kenan Arnautovic M.D., Esad Boskailo M.D., Emir Festic M.D., Aleksandar Hemon, Jasmina Ingersoll, Adnan Kapo, Adnan Mrkva, Adnan Pasic, and Adnan Sarcevic M.D. We also thank many others who have contacted us and have inquired about other ways to help.
If any of your questions remain unanswered or if you have any suggestions/comments/ideas on how to help and get involved, please visit our Contact Form and write to us.
Thank you,
