Selkirk Media Group
What We Have Achieved
2010/11
Selkirk Media Group was formed just after the summer time when it was posted in the bulletin that Selkirk High School needed a Young Scot team. A group of enthusiastic workers decided that this was to be their year and what they have achieved this year has been fantastic.
Our first task was to under go a training course which alerted us to a variety of different skills and techniques that would make our year successful. After an inspiring afternoon, we put together a plan that showed what they aimed to achieve that month with such things like the information board that is located in the dinning hall. It became our priority at that point in time to assemble articles and to set up our local Youth Information Point website. With some help form professionals we made our site which you can now find a link to on our school website, which shows everyone what we have achieved recently and what new events that are happening in the local area.
However, our biggest achievement by far this year has been the Anti Smoking Campaign. This is when we took on the challenge of producing a film for the NHS about raising awareness about the dangers of smoking, with a very comical but effective idea coming to the groups mind almost instantly. We put forth our idea after months of preparation and changes, and as a result we were awarded a £2000 grant to make the film with this amazing news sent the group into a buzz of excitement and we are all delighted with the outcome. We worked with a director from the BBC, Stuart Grieve, who helped shape our initial script as well as record and set up the film. He inspired the actors to perform to a good ability, thus, it lead to a very comical and enjoyable presentation about the dangers of smoking. We cannot stress enough the effort that Miss Roan has put into helping us make the film, as well as the whole Youth Point Information, and we could never have brought it together without her dedication. We have all had a fantastic year working together and hope that those of you interested in joining the Youth Information Point next year will not hold back on taking part in a fantastic opportunity to do something great.
The Royal Marines
The Royal Marines Commandos are an amphibious fighting force which is part of the Royal Navy. The Marines can be traced back to the 1600s and the best commandos can be selected as part of the SBS. The Royal Marines host one of the most demanding and challenging training courses in the world and boasts around 7500 recruits. Specialising in warfare on land and at sea, the vast amount of skills required for a Marine are extremely important, from things such as long range swimming to carrying out dangerous operations in enemy territory.
The Royal Marines recruit from the ages of 17 to 26 at the oldest and must be above 1.51 meters in height. Officers require 5 good standard grades or GCSEs and 3 A Level or Higher passes. Training is held in Lympstone and the different Units headquarters are in Taunton, Plymouth and Arbroath. The marines work in different areas around the world including Iraq and Afghanistan and are renowned for their bravery and skill in warfare as well as the infamous Green Beret that every marine gains after training. The Royal Marines motto is By Sea By Land although advertising for recruitment is Its a state of mind. The Marines also offer recruits to play for sports teams and other recreation activities and are known well around the world for The Royal Marines Band Service, which tours the world playing all sorts of music. The Royal Marines have received criticism over their understated approach and arrogance and also over the dispute that woman arent allowed to recruit in anything but the Band Service
How to dominate your studying

To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness.
We all do this at some point, for instance playing with an internet pen name generator instead of writing an article, the results of which you see above. . While studying, procrastination is your greatest enemy. How many times have you sat down on the computer to go on BBC bitesize but ended up on facebook or youtube? How often do you look down at your summary notes and see you have been doing an elaborate doodle for the best part of an hour? The best to combat this is to create an area of your house, school or library, to become your study zone. Here should be organised and equipped with everything you will need to study. It should be silent, or with simple music playing, depending on what works for you. When you sit down you should have in mind a goal that you must complete before you leave. Be realistic with this, and never study for more than one hour without, at least, a fifteen minute break.
Rewarding yourself is also important, though one very important tip is to only reward what you have done and not what you are totally gonna do in a sec, because we know from experience that this simply doesnt work. Having something fun in mind to do after study will give you an incentive to continue. Rewarding can be anything from going out with your friends for an evening to simply reading a book for ten minutes.
Study groups always seem like a good idea but can end up as more of a hindrance than a help. One way you can make it work, however, is to structure your group with people who are taking at least one of the same subjects as you and who you trust not to distract you. It is best to tackle one subject at a time instead of jumping back and forth. Study groups should not be used as an excuse to chat with your friends; it should be a chance to study with the reassurance of support if and when you encounter a problem or someone to test you. Studying with a tutor or teacher present can also be useful as it will mean once you have arranged a time to study with help and guidance from people who understand what will help you pass the exams.
One piece of advice freely given out in Soc Ed classes is to create a study schedule. For both of us, however, this method has never even slightly worked, since something more important always comes up, like going to the cinema. For some people, this regime provides a systematic way of studying. So we suggest studying at a time when you know you wont be doing anything else or in between those T.V. shows you just cant live without. So you should try different methods to find what works best for you.
There is no perfect set way of studying, everyone is different but we do know that beating procrastination can help everyone a great deal when studying. So stop reading this and start studying.
