July 30th - August 13th
Feed by Seed’s first trip went to Nicaragua on July 30th! Once we arrived, we spent our first afternoon organizing materials, getting to know each other, and enjoying the semi-tropical climate.
The next morning we had an early start to attend a traditional Nicaraguan church service, and afterwards explored a local, active volcano. The rest of the day was full of other interesting stops full of agriculture, unique foods, and smiling people.
Day three was spent travelling to Somotillo and breaking into our two focus work groups that we stayed in the rest of our time in the country. The first team will was the “Youth Agriculture Education” team, led by Ms. Kristin Carr. They spent a majority of their time facilitating some of the first agriculture education classes in the area. On the weekends this group worked with the teachers on how to sustain agriculture education once the Feed by Seed team left. The second team was fouced on the “Model Farm Development,” led by Gary Larrowe. From car-rots, to corn, to lima beans, this team worked in preparing the land and, and planting. They also are planning on building built a raised bed that is being used to start vegetables in which are later transplanted to the feilds.
Both teams were responsible for case studies on their experiences and compiling data from several various research projects we planned. Some afternoons both teams partnered together to go on “Village Visits.” While in local villages, we surveyed the agricultural needs of the people with the help of translators. This gave us a much better un-derstanding of how to continue to help the local people develop their much needed agriculture system.

A special thanks to Powers Tractor and Equitment and the Troy-Bilt/Cub Cadet Corperation for their willingness to donate a brand new Troy-Bilt Horse Tiller to help us be more effective while working. This will be a HUGE help from now on as we work to teach about agriculture and fight the overwelming problem of hunger and poverty.
Thank you for all of your support and kindness! It means the world to my family and me!
