Warrnambool Telephone Company commenced business in June 1988, and within one month of the Telecommunications de-regulation announced in May 1988. Eric Read resigned from a 19 Year period in the technical service and sales areas with Telstra (Telecom Australia), to create his own telecommunications business in the south west area of Victoria. Private retail supply, installation and service of telecommunications equipment, telephone systems and related products and cabling was something new in an industry that had been a monopoly until de-regulation was scheduled. In partnership with Jan Read, trading under the name of "Phone Attic", and soon after, a name change to “Warrnambool Telephone Company”. The business grew rapidly as de-regulation allowed more services to become privatised. By 1990 the business had expanded and had a healthy client base of local businesses, larger premises and more skilled and qualified technical and sales staff were required and trained, to meet the demand on the business and its’ customers. “Warrnambool Telephone Company” made its’ mark on local business, and was gaining a reputation for delivering customer satisfaction and prompt efficient service and by the late 90’s WTC was a Telstra Premium Mobile and Fixed Dealer with a team of 20 sales and technical people to serve their growing client base.By 1999 E & J Read Pty Ltd signed up with Telstra as a Telstra Licensed Shop in Warrnambool and later in Hamilton also, along with maintaining the WTC Telecommunications original technician based business supplying and servicing business telecommunication products and services to a wide geographical base.In 2010 E & J Read Pty Ltd sold the 2 x Telstra Shop Licenses to concentrate on the large WTC business customer base, of VoIP networks, products and services, excluding mobile services.“Warrnambool Telephone Company” currently has a strong technical and sales team serving the area’s government, large commercial and small to medium businesses with a positive view of a strong healthy future going forward well into the 21st century.
