Classroom Rules:1. Always do your best2. Follow directions the first time they are given3. Use an inside voice4. Listen appropriately5. Walk in classroom and hallways6. Respect others and their belongingsMy goal is to reward positive behaviors. I use praise, awards, stickers, treats and other special privileges and rewards. If there is a problem with following the rules, your child will change their stick from green to one of the following colors: 1st – Yellow Stick, warning (generally I give a verbal warning first) 2nd – Red Stick, loss of some recess time 3rd—Blue Stick, sent to office to discuss behavior and/or note homeSevere offenses may not be handled this way and could result in a phone call to you and/or immediately being sent to the office.Homework Homework is an important part of your child’s education. It is used to reinforce and improve skills your child has learned in class. Reading Homework Your child should read appropriate level books for a minimum of 15 minutes a school day. He/She will receive a reading log sheet for each month to record the name of the book read each night. If the reading book is sent home to read for homework, this counts towards the reading log. Spelling Homework Your child will bring home a list of 15 spelling words each Friday. Before the next Friday they should put these in alphabetical order and write a sentence for each one. Homework Assignment Sheet There will be a weekly assignment sheet in your child’s folder with assignments for the week and notes about events happening here at school. Please make sure your child writes his/her name on this paper when it is sent home and parents should initial it each night as your child has completed his/her homework.General Information • Students should be at school by 7:45 each morning. Students arriving after 8 a.m. will be marked tardy.• Any money sent to school should be in an envelope and labeled with your child’s name and the purpose of the money.• Lunch tickets that have expired will be sent home to notify you to purchase a new one.• On the days we are scheduled to attend Mass, all students must attend. The Mass schedule will be posted at a later date and noted on the Weekly Assignment Sheet.• Birthdays are wonderful things to share. If you would like to share your child’s birthday with a small treat for the class, please give me a few days notice. You may drop off or send in the treat in the morning and we will serve it after lunch. If the treat requires a napkin, spoon, or plate, please send those in as well.• Occasionally I will ask for items to be sent in to complete a project. These are generally items found at home and I try to give you plenty of notice. • If you need to speak with me, please call the school (363-5313) and Mrs. Poling will give me a message. I will return your call. If you would like to arrange a conference time, I am available 7:30-8:00 a.m. and 3:00-3:30 most days. I have other times available if necessary to accommodate your schedule.

Tips to help you read with your child at home:

Find a quiet. comfortable place.

Let your child see you reading.

Read aloud to your child.

Talk about the stories you read together.

You don't always have to "sound it out."

It is our instinct to say that, but there are so many other ways to correctly identify a difficult word.

Instead, try these helpful words:

"What would make sense there?"

"Use the picture to help you figure it out?"

"Skip that word and go back and reread the sentence."

"Put in a word that would make sense."

Most importantly make sure your child is selecting books that are not too difficult for him/her. I use the rule of 5. If a child is reading and makes more than 5 errors on one page, I consider that book too hard. Find an easier book; there is no sense in frustrating both of you.
