Heather Grays work is driven from her personal experience as a woman, mother and housewife. Her interest in costume, identity, landscape, family relationships, displacement, and narrative are examined through her performative, theatrical, and sculptural techniques and surmised within her keen photographic eye. Working within the social context of the female form as sex-selling-object combined with a rural existence, she engages with the myriad ways in which women and the body are depicted by the mass media through powerful images that represent the notion of beauty, consumerism and the role of women in society. Her work takes the viewer on a dreamscape ride through an existence that is whimsical, daring, and socially awakening. She has received her BFA in Sculpture with a Minor in Photography and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University and her MFA in Visual Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her photographs have been shown both nationally and internationally.
