Who Are You Online? by Jesse Trahan (Towson University)
Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 5:00 PM in Stephens Hall 216
Jesse Trahan, Director of Marketing for the College of Graduate Studies and Research at Towson spoke on the topic of How to Properly Manage Your Online Identity. This is a very important topic these days as many of us have online identities and find it difficult to manage them properly. One of the main considerations with online identity, is that we have to ask ourselves the following question: what aspects of our lives do we want public? Once information is posted online, it has now entered the online world and is viewable to anyone who seeks out that information. Jesses main point was to maintain continuity for your online identity, and one way of doing this is by keeping the same name, contact information, profile picture, etc. to keep consistency for those who are viewing your profile. A suggestion that Jesse made was to purchase a domain name, and with this you would be able to inform others that you have your own website. With this you could make any adjustments that you desire and you could post your resume, portfolio, among other items. Jesse also recommended having three different email accounts, and in his opinion this is the best way to manage your online identity. The three accounts are: domain, professional (current employment), and a catch-all/utility. Another point that Jesse made was that if you are going to get involved in the social networks and all that is available, make sure you do it right! For example this means that if you are to set up a Facebook, Linkedin, or Twitter among other accounts make sure that you regularly update your information and interact with the other users. By doing so you are keeping up with the times and showing others that activity is occurring. Another great way to assist in managing online identity is a aggregator, like Otherinbox.com which helps organize your inbox. So go ahead and properly manage your online identity!
