Tips on hiring a reputable contractor
1. Determine what you want accomplished and approximately how much you're willing to invest
2. Ask friends, neighbors, and acquaintances for contractor referrals from their own past projects
3. Verify each company's licensure and reputation with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), or Hawaii's Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO)
- Also: look for memberships and associations with builder organizations, such as the Building Industry Association (BIA)
4. Meet with two or three contractors and have them provide written estimates on the exact same scope of work. At the same time, ask the contractor for testimonials on their work during the past 36 months
For more tips on hiring a contractor, visit Hawaii's Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs website or search the web.
