How to Apply for ATB & TRE
Academic Technical Bowl is a Jeopardy style competition which pits teams of 4 students from schools within the region against each other, as they answer questions about thermodynamics, statics, computer science and more. The competition started as a way to improve members scores and prepare them for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam which is necessary to receive an Engineering License. The top team will go on to compete at the National Convention in Toronto and represent Region 6.
The deadline to register has been moved to Nov. 5th, 2009 on NOL. Registration for both competitions will be open soon on NOL under the competitions and scholarships link. If you have any questions feel free to contact the Region VI Academic Excellence Chair, Jessica Farr, at r6academicschair_yahoo.com or Region VI Programs Chair, Saba Abuhay, at r6programschair_yahoo.com.
This year Undergraduate Students in Technical Research (USTR) and the Technical Research Paper (TRP) have been replaced by the Technical Research Exposition (TRE) which is a competition open to both graduate and undergraduate members. Participants will present their work with the aid of a poster to and go through a question and answer session with judges. The top three will go on to the National Convention to represent Region 6 and even those who do not make it into the top three are encouraged to bring their posters to the National Convention and showcase their work. The exposition is a great opportunity for all students who have completed research to gain experience giving technical presentations.

Science Fair
Kid Zone
Welcome to the fabulous world of science! The National Society of Black Engineers understands that in order to accomplish this mission we must raise the awareness of pre-college students to opportunities in science and technology. Science fairs are an excellent venue for pre-college students to display their creativity and scientific abilities. Students get an opportunity to research, in detail, a topic chosen by and interesting to them. Through science fair projects, students will discover how science relates to every part of their lives.
The purpose of the Team Engineering Design Competition is to expose pre-college students to a hands-on, team oriented, collaborative activity that involves mathematics, physics, mechanical engineering, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and industrial engineering. Upon completion of the design project, teams will exhibit their designs at the 2009 Fall Regional Conferences held in each of the six NSBE regions.
Kid Zone Conference is a conference specifically targeted toward at-risk Black students in grades 3 through 5. It is designed to help prepare them for academic challenges in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. It is hoped that through this program the students will gain an interest in these subjects that allows them to excel academically in their current grade level, and pave the way for future successes in secondary and post-secondary education. The activities are designed to enhance the critical thinking skills of the students and to engage them in the scientific process.
Try-Math-A-Lon is a tutoring program meant to foster good study habits for at-risk Black students, help prepare forstandardized test exams such as the ACT and SAT, promote competition and good sportsmanship. The TMAL competition is held between teams composed of high school students in grades 9-12. The purpose of the competition is to help groom TMAL team members for success in STEM courses and prepare them for standardized SAT/ACT testing.
