Andrew Sharpe, Principal Cornet
Andrew began playing the cornet at the age of ten following in his fathers footsteps.
At 16 he went to Barnsley College on a YTS scheme studying music under Major Peter Parks and David Hirst. During his performance studies diploma he was tutored by Philip McCann and Alan Morrison. At the age of 17 Andrew joined Yorkshire Imperial Band under David Hirst.
In 1993 Andrew undertook a Bachelor of Arts degree in band studies at Sheffield University. During his 2nd year he was awarded the Harry Mortimer memorial prize for contributions to the brass band movement. Whilst at university Andrew received tuition from Roger Webster, David Hirst, Alan Morrison and Russell Gray.
Whilst still at University Andrew joined the South Nottinghamshire Hussars Band on principal cornet. He held this position for approximately 6 years until appointed Warrant Officer Class 1 Bandmaster with the band. Whilst with the Hussars Andrew and the band were involved in performing with massed bands of over 200 players and also played for many members of the Royal family. He attended Kneller Hall, the Royal Military School of Music.
On completion of his BA (hons) degree Andrew found employment as a brass teacher with Derbyshire Music Services, a capacity he still works in today. He has undertaken an ALCM (TD) to further advance his education. Andrew is currently in his last semester of a Post Graduate Certificate of Education specialising in Key Stage 2 and 3 music.
Since departing the Hussars band Andrew has also been a member of Derwent Brass, Barnsley Building Society Band and assistant principal cornet at The Ransome Band.
