Unfortunately, the precise history of LUTG is uncertain. What we do know is that it is not only one of the biggest student societies in Lancaster but it is also one the oldest. LUTG is thought to have begun around 35 years ago as a ‘staff only’ theatre group. Around 30 years ago it made the switch to a student society and has been producing high quality student theatre ever since.
Over the years, LUTG has formed close links with the on-campus studio theatre 'the Nuffield theatre' and the off campus Lancaster arts and community hall 'the Gregson centre'. In recent years LUTG has begun to form links with alternative venues in Lancaster city as it tries to interact more with the local community. In 2003 LUTG performed in not only the Gregson centre and Nuffield theatre but also in St Thomas's church and St Paul's church hall.
Prior to the 2003/2004 season LUTG only performed a maximum of two productions each term. However, the society has now grown so large that a decision was made to produce 3 shows per term. This means that LUTG produces 9 high quality professional shows in a variety of venues every year to an annual audience of around 10,000 people. Even a professional theatre company may struggle to produce this but LUTG manages it with ease - and its members still manage to do some work for their university degrees!
